I want to put an LS6 or LS2, probably with a 4L60 trans into a 79-81 Trans Am.......any help would be much appreciated.

And I don't think it is people JUST wanting to put em in older F-Bods (although there is a large group that do), there are tons of diff conversions I see on this forum on a fairly regular basis........I know if I had an older non-4th gen and I found out I could get a new LSx motor in it and not have to drop $10-20k to buy another car + spend more money on mods after that, I would like that idea. Especially if I didn't have to sell the current car (older F-Bod)........but that is just me.

I've been a lifelong GM guy, this Miata is only my second Japanese car and the other, a 1973 240Z wound up with a 350 Chevy in it too.
Have fun, don't take life too seriously, you're going to live longer than you ever imagined was possible
Wouldn't want to go hammering around the roadracing courses over here on track days in such a magnificent machine.
One of my driving instructors, Will Hartje (from Merry Ole England) said; "Never race anything you're not ready to push off a cliff"
