Anyone with 1in setbacks with a 4l80e trans have to shorten the drive shaft? Or will the stock GN one work?

You will definitely need to shorten drive shaft with 4l80e.

I sent a pm member 76LQ9TA the other day asking about his swap. He is using a 4l60e. Said the original length of this drive shaft in his 85 cutlass was about 57" and after having it cut down it ended up being around 51" or so. That's with set back plates.

Default Drive Shaft shortened

I took my drive shaft from a 1979 Monte Carlo to a shop to get it shortened and balanced and the company told me that it's going to cost around 240... I was wondering if this is what it usually cost?

Going to depend a lot on your location.

I've heard of some people getting it done for around $100 give or take.

I decided to go ahead and get it done because they said that they are going to change the shaft tubing to a brand new tube and two new universal joints.... I thinks I should have looked for a cheaper solution but I'm tired of waiting to drive my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to two different places today.

One Truck dismantler for various type of trucks

And the other was GM dismantler.

1st place

5.3L 78k harness all accessories EVERYTHING needed $1800

6.0L 89k EVERYTHING needed $2000

Both included rebuilt trans of my choice, 0 miles with warranty (forgot how long of warrany, have to check my notes)

2nd place GM place wants

2000 for 5.3l complete take out

2800 for 6.0l complete take out

anywhere from 80k-100k plus on motor and trans 3 month warranty or something like that.

Think its obvious I want to deal with first place. Thinking should I try and low ball fist place by $100 or so for the 6.0L . Or take it and RUN!!!

Also anyone using double pass radiator with their swap?

Was looking at this one, looked like it should fit nice after taking measurements. And looks a whole lot better then having to cut/find radiator hose to stretch across to other side.

I see a lot of G-body swaps with the 1" set back plates. Is everyone also moving the transmission cross member back 1"? And what are the advantages of moving the engine back an inch (aside from better weight distribution)?

Many shops that offer to cut and then balance will not balance unless you have new U-joints installed.

I chose to press mine out, buy new ones and press them in. The shop service to cut and balance afterwards was 70.00. But if I remember correctly they were looking for around 180.00 parts and labor if they did the u-joints.

They have to make money on parts so the parts were higher for the same parts I bought at a known auto parts store.

Maybe this is why your estimate is this high?

I was considering this when looking for a rad but since I could not get one that would fit clean with the Buick GN rad top/mount I decided to just get the standard rad and use the hoses others have used. Plus this one had a provision for the vent tube (the brass barb fitting in picture). Yes I know there are cleaner looking ways to do this but this is what I did as it was easy.
