Default When should you screw the rim.

Got a set of centerline convpros, 26/10.5 out back wondering when people start screwing the rims . Gonna be putting them on sometime soon and was gonna get them balanced so any help would be nice.

Thanks

I would screw the rims regardless of power levels and 60' times. It's easy and cheap to do, so why not do it.

Simply mark the tire with a wax pencil next time you go racing. Put an arrow on the tire pointing at where the inflating valve is located. If that position doesn't match up at the end of the race day, your tires are moving.

I was cutting 1.4 60' times in my Formula, and the tires never moved (28" ET Drags, 10" wide Weld Draglites). It also depends on the tires, the wheels, and how hard the car shocks the rearend.

I went a bunch of 1.48-1.55's on maybe four different rim/slick combos and never had problems. I usually did not go lower than 14 psi cold.

Like nineball said mark them and if they move, screw them. We have convo pros with 26 10.0 et drags and the first time out with the heads and cam they spun at least an inch every pass, even with the 1st easy launch pass. We ran them at 16psi cold. Now they are screwed to the rim.

Couple of other questions on screwing the rims.

How many screws on each side? If you screw the rims, would you have to run tubes?

Thanks

No tubes are needed when you screw the rims. I have 9 on each side of the rim. Some go 8 or more/less. Its really up to you. I would go with 8 on each side just so you only have to buy one pack of screws.

I had Discount Tire use bead sealer on my slicks on my 88 Mustang. Ran 1.36 60' with 13 psi and no slippage. Not only does it "glue" the tire to the rim but your tires never leak down.

Carefull with hardware store screws, the moroso and whatever rim screws are grade 8, if the hole in your rim is a bit too small you snap off those hardware store ones pretty easy, unless you can get grade 8s at your bolt store of course

If you want to be perfect get a protractor, yardstick, marker and a piece of posterboard, cut it the same diameter as the wheel and mark it off every 45 degrees and then draw the lines all the way to the edge if the circle, lay it on the wheel and use that to mark where you want them. I do it a little more low tech, just eyeball 4 of them 90 degrees apart and then put the other 4 in between - sometimes it looks a little off but you dont notice when the wheels are turning

I found that it helps if you scuff up the inside of the rim with a wire wheel, where the bead meets the rim. If the tire still slips, than you screw.

I just can't bring myself to screw my new Bogarts. I atleast want to see if the tire has any slippage on the rim first. I did screw my Weld Draglites, but they had never presented a problem without them. I will probley order another set of Bogarts for the rear to run Hoosier Drag Slicks on, those will get screwed for sure.
