393rwhp/388rwtq - '02 LS6 cam, stock LS1 heads, bolt-ons
As some of you may know, last summer I put my car back to stock in order to sell it. When those plans well through for the time being, I was left with a bone stock car. And those that know me well know I can't leave anything alone.
With that being, I still had a ton of old parts sitting in the garage from the last 4 years of modding. One Sunday, I went up to the shop and the re-modding started (again... ).
Here is what the car has done to it now:
- stock pistons/rods/crank
- JE rings, Federal Mogual bearings, ARP main studs, ARP rod-bolts
- stock LS1 heads
- LS6 intake manifold
- '02 LS6 cam
- Comp 918s, TR 7.400" pushrods
- ported TB
- MAC headers w/ ORP (ported, but still have the crappy MAC collectors)
- Hooker catback
- ASP pulley
- stock 10-bolt/3:42s , '02 LS6 clutch, stock flywheel, FMS adjustable master cylinder, WS6 wheels
This resulted in 393rwhp/388rwtq. This was through the Hooker catback and no shortbelt. It was dynoed just as I drive it on the street. The first few pulls were 386rwhp/377rwtq, but the A/F was a super rich 12.0:1. I leaned the car out and this picked the car up across the board.
Dyno graph - '02 LS6 cam/stock LS1 heads
The cam has absolutely zero lope to it and drives just like stock! (it is a stock cam, lol) I had always wondered what this cam would do with stock LS1 heads and I was very happy with the results.
As good as the LS6 cam is, there is still more power to be had with a slightly larger, aggressive cam and not hurting driveability in the least. So, I'll be swapping in a newer version of the Thunder Racing Old Man Cam in the coming weeks. We plan to try out some new lobe combinations in search of excellent power, but retaining the driveability and idle quality of a stock vehicle will be the primary goal. The '02 LS6 cam was an excellent baseline for these new lobes.
I will be installing a 3" Flowmaster collector and a cutout on the car this week to see if 400rwhp can be attained with this cam.
FWIW, the dyno runs today were done at Futral Motorsports to see how their new dyno compared to Thunder's dyno. The three pulls I did before leaning it out was exactly how the car was setup at Thunder (386rwhp/377rwtq) when I first installed these mods last week. It looks as if the two dynos read nearly the same!

Rodney, I do think this motor is probably a little stronger than most due to the rebuild. The block was stress honed and align honed since the cylinder and main housing bores were out of the factory specs (the motor was very tired to say the least, lol). It didn't take much though. I assembled it just like all the other ones I build.

Awesome results; I've been a big fan of the LS6 cam because of its top end and affordability. I look forward to seeing a comparison graph of your "old man" cam and the LS6 in a few weeks. If I dont hear anything about it, I'll assume the gain was minimal;so post up to show us what the Thunder cam can really do.

Good numbers Jason. Looks like you are going to shift around 6500 by looking at the dyno graph you posted. Do you know how to shift that low of a rpm. Can't wait to install my TR230/224 and hear that lope. I hope I make some good numbers with my cam and stock heads too and hopefully I don't have any more problems with my ASP pulley. I also hope that my bottom end holds up to those 6800rpm shifts too.

That's great results with an LS6 cam as good as a lot of bigger cams do with stock heads.
I wonder what the car would make a with a good set of ported heads and that cam. Likewise I wonder what an LPE GT2-3 with a little more intake and exhaust duration would make.

Great results. The Ls6 cam's hp curve is so topheavy though. As mentioned above, it would be interesting to see how much more area the old man cam can fill in under the curve.

that's amazing. almost the same numbers as me and i have the tr230. hmm, me thinks that maybe bigger isn't allways better

Damn good numbers! Btw.. I think it has a little to do with those being the stock heads off my car!

Damn those numbers are crazy for an LS6 cam. The best I could get with my old LS6 cam was 376 rwhp and that was with everything in my sig minus the cutout, Pace MAF, Yella Terra's and my TR224. I had Mikey from Rapid tune that setup also. Sounds like you got a helluva strong motor there!
