Default Gained additional power and torque to my setup!

Ever since I installed my Thunder Racing Torque cam in April, I've not taken the time to properly dyno tune it. I rushed it over to MTI back in May and put down a respectable number, but I knew there was lots more power waiting to come out.

Fast forward to July. I finally was able to take some time to address a problem that was not fitting into my No Compromises philosophy. My clutch.

In a nutshell, my Spec 3 clutch was a POS from day one and chattered until the day I took it out. In its place went an awesome Exedy dual disc clutch. If you're not familiar with Exedy, they're a premier clutch mfr. from Japan and their products are extremely high tech. My previous Ram flywheel and Spec 3 clutch was 3 lbs heavier than stock. The Exedy is lighter than stock. Torque capacity is 850 lb ft.! Engagement is smooth and strong.

While we were putting the y-pipe back on the car, we noticed that both catalytic converter bricks were trashed! On the driver's side, the inside 1/3 of the honeycomb was closed off...don't ask me how. On the passenger side, the brick had come loose and was floating around. Needless to say, we gutted the cats. Today, we got on the chassis dyno to finally do some wideband tuning. When I dynoed at MTI last May, I had only used the narrowbands to set my A/F ratio. Needless to say, the tune wasn't perfect.

When we were finally done today, we had gained 20 rwhp and 19 rwtq! Some of the gain came from the lighter clutch, some came from the gutted cats and some came from wideband O2 super-tuning. Car runs even better now!

Major props go out to Kurt Decker (98 Aggie) for the use of his lift, tools, dyno and muscle. Additional thanks go to LS1 Joe of T56 Rebuilds for his clutch swap advice, to Geoff Skinner from Thunder Racing for his tuning tips, and to Tony Mamo for the good-guy deal on the already-broken-in Exedy clutch. The people on this site are the best!

Wow! Almost 500 "steet-friendly" rwhp from a NA 346. Congrats

Those Exedy clutches cost quite a few Yen.

Good news man! How is the clutch pedal feel? When you say strong, does that mean it is hard to push in? Just wonder if it feels any different from when in a vette to a fbody.

Chad, the clutch has a light pedal. It's very easy to push in...maybe even easier than my Spec 3. But when I say strong, I mean the engagement is very fast, very strong (but not chattery or abrupt).

Hey Pat, I don't know if you remember me suggesting the Exedy Twin Plate some time back? I am glad to hear that you like it. Worth every penny. Great Numbers but I still got ya on the Tq side lol. Just giving you a hard time. I see its time to upgrade to the 90/90 setup so I can get her a little closer to the 500 rwhp mark. Anyways great numbers, and glad to hear you are loving the Exedy Twin Plate. Should make a difference at the track.

Yes, you definitely have me on the torque side. You Vette guys running LG long tube headers have a definite advantage in the exhaust department. When LG begins to offer their long tube headers for the F-bodies, we should see our torque numbers come up even more. Good stuff!

Hey Pat,

Please refresh my memory...are you running the .040 cometics? and how much were the 225s shaved? And finally, if I call up thunderracing tech, and mention your cam grind, will they have it on file?

Thanks,

Alex

I'm running .040" Cometics, my heads are 59cc, my pistons have 2cc valve reliefs (so the net volume is more like 61cc). Thunder Racing will grind you the same cam I have if you ask for it. They may even have it in stock.

Right now, all I have from the e-mail of yesterday's dyno sheets are the numerical values. Here I have plotted them into a graph so you can see the curves. All numbers are SAE. Correction factor was 1.02.

Ah great, thanks for the quick reply.

Now, the 2cc valve reliefs were there for your original cam, correct? With the present cam you have now, is there any need for reliefs? I have stock heads (for now) and want to run cam only for just a while.

I have forged flat-top pistons. They came with valve reliefs. At 59cc chamber with a 2.08 intake valve, the reliefs give me peace of mind, but for the record, P to V clearance is very generous when running this cam with stock heads...and remember, it's the duration that gives you P to V clearance problems, not lift.
