should i ditch my procharger setup and go turbo?

Im building a new car this year and ive been toying with the idea of selling my F1A setup and going turbo. my reasons are that i have the worst exhaust system possible and will have to fork out around 1600 between headers a y and a cat back to maximize what i have and ill still never get close to the power levels or more importantly times of many of you out here. the chassis i picked up is pretty sweet as far as suspension setups go and i think i could put a lot of power to it and get into the 8s easily. my transmission is pretty much bulletproof and my motor should be good for 1000rwhp without any issues. the car will see a fair amount of street use so drivability is important. what do you guys think i should do and what kind of turbo setup should I go with if you think i should switch?

the F1A is a very nice blower, I would just re-do the exhaust and take it from there. What kind of power are you speaking of? There is a very broad range and maybe narrowing it down would help figure something out.

1000hp with the f1a is very doable. Also is doable with a turbo. Just the limit is the iron stock block and 4 bolt heads. I am toying with the same idea. I won't do it now because I haven't driven the car enough with the procharger on it, but might do it in a year or so.

i havent heard of anyone making 1000 rwhp with an f1a, not that its the ultimate goal but i dont think i could get more than 850-875rwhp with my setup and for the times i would like to run i think i need 1000+ without cutting the car up and im not willing to do that

what kind of times? KP had a d1 as well as a f1a iirc and did pretty good with it. (8.xx in the quarter on stock(ish?) cubes) And it was far from "cut up" imo.

LS2/402 with AFR 225 heads and our forced induction camshaft. F-1A at only 12.4 psi of boost. Plenty of boost left in this one, and it's making 864 rwhp. Bob

Yes, these AFR heads are a big part of it, combined with our blower cam they make for a great combination. This engine use to have a stock LS2 intake manifold on it, and it was at 14.5 psi of boost. We lost 2 psi of boost when we swapped to the FAST 92 intake but picked up 60 rwhp. That shows just how restrictive the LS2 intakes are. Bob

Correct, they are off the shelf heads. It is hard to say what even better flowing heads would do, Tony Mamo had done a light port job on my AFR 225 heads that were on my 408 with an F-1A, but I was running a powerglide with a 5000 stall that we kept driving through. Bob

I keep getting different answers on the whole intake swap thing. I know bob would never steer me wrong though! I'm pretty close to max impeller speed alreasy, although I know my boltons are holding me back. How fast were u spinning that f1 bob? 8s are my ultimate goal here and I think my etp 245s are more than sufficient for flow

But if I had a f1a, I would stick with it and talk to Bob on the exhaust and other components that will make you smile at the thought of your sc again.

You have most of the parts to get into the high 8's as it is, all you really need is the headers and exhaust system. I guess it depends on just how fast you want to take it. Either way is going to require a really good fuel system, and you'll need a good exhaust system either way. Bob

im in exactly the same boat as you, im debating on going to a big single turbo and ditching my d1, or upgrading to a f1. I'm maxed out on the d1 and don't think my motor is running the way it should (129mph in the 1/4) with 1 3/4 in headers and a 408.

d1is a little small for a 408 but you should still be faster than that i would think. If I go turbo i would be running some type of stock manifold right? my fuel system should be sufficient, I was only arount 80-85% duty cycle and I run meth for safety. what do you think im leaving on the table for hp with exhaust? (pacesetter/flowmaster) very embarassed to admit that by the way.LOL
