i dont recommend changing tunes all the time.
once the car is tuned, more specifically a turbo car you can adjust power easily with a boost controller.
This ^^^ is exactly how I do it. Works great I have three power levels, wastegate spring=5# 480hp......setting A=8# 550hp.....setting B=10-11# 610hp

yep i also have power settings in the high 4s mid 5s and over 600

good mix for a street car.

i can highly recommend the AEM tru boost electronic controller built into a gauge.
usually around 250-300

live boost gauge with settable peaks and alarms, and 2 duty cycle settings +1(wastegate)

Have you thought about adding a knock sensor?

Or perhaps a cheap pair of homemade det-cans? Some argue they're more sensitive than knock sensors and they're certainly more in line with the sloppy theme, budget wise.

I made up a set of electronic ones out of some really cheap **** before. They worked pretty well. I can't really remember how much extra garbage was in this thread, but here's a writeup I did on it:

http://efi101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=32424

Summary: take one eBay SpyEar thing, add a bosch flat response (aka "Wideband") knock sensor a little wire and a potentiometer and some cheap headphones. Knock becomes much more audible! It's pretty helpful for tuning. I also made and used some of the non-electronic ones too, I can comment on those when I get back home.

I have done this as well. I took a listening device that came with headphones, a spool of wire and soldered the wire to the microphone leads. At the end of the spool of wire I just put a large alligator clamp. Worked excellent. I can take some pics if you can't find it. Think I had $25 in the whole set up. Probably find it under DIY electronic stethoscope.

Pretty much, with that set up you can move it around to various bolts on the engine and listen to different areas. It works very well surprisingly.

If you type "det cans" in Google you will find a million examples. The turbo miata guys use these things because some years didn't come with knock sensors. There are also examples of what to listen for floating around youtube.
