The reason you would use smaller headers is to bolster that low feel/tq when not in boost. Additional gears require less power/throttle for a given rate of acceleration, that's why new cars are adding gears as less throttle opening=better fuel MPG.

So what size primary and pipes do you suggest I run based on my goals and setup? I would like that off boost torque. But I also don't want to restrict the engine too much

You have a 1 inch long intake port, so the header can't change much on the backside. I would try and get 1 7/8 or 2 inch tube on it so it's not choked when you race it.

Great thread... I like that you're planning to put it in a 1st gen Firebird as opposed to everyone else who wants a Camaro.

Yeah it's nice to be a little different! I like the firebirds more than the camaro's.

Do you know if whipple are planning on doing any front drive front entry setups coming out? Just thinking it would make the packaging easier than the front drive rear entry setups.

Just the 2.9 for now. I haven't heard any talk about front feed big blowers yet. If I do, I'll post about it.

As per your request, here is my input. On some of the 4.0 whipples we have done, especially the big boost ones, those cranks have broke the snout off. Most of them have been running the stand alone belt on the blower too. We only use the Callies Magnum on anything over 800 crank hp with a blower. Manley makes a good product, but for your setup, I would go Callies. Again, not every Manley crank has broke but we have seen it. Yes most of out stuff goes into off road vehicles and get pounded, but an engine is an engine. Just my 2 cents...

Say hi to Mike for me! And tell him thanks for sending us the mach up 4.5!

We are in the process of making a bolt on box that will relocate the throttle body to the side and accept the standard 4 bolt LS2 flange style throttle bodies. It will look like the one we already make for the 3.3 and 4.0. I know its not exactly what you were looking for, but should still help!

Directly from Whipple's website, it says the 4.0 displaces 3850cc/rev which is 3.85liters per rev.

Making some progress on the parts collection. Still have a long ways to go. I now have my rotating assembly, all manley pro series. Will be 408 in displacement. Trick flow 255 LS3 heads. 10:1 compression ratio. Yella terra ultra lite rocker arms. Oh and tires, 295/55-15 M/T drag radials. Lol. A little soon for those but oh well. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.
I'm searching for a 6liter block at the moment. Once I have the short block done, I'll start mocking up the different options for the blower so I can run the billet supercharger inlet. I may need to put a two inch spacer under the discharge plate to get the throttle body above the fire wall. Then I'll need to figure out how big of a cowl hood I'll need to run.
