Selling my Jake's 4l80e, need some glide advice for turbo car
Just curious what exactly I need to look for in a good glide designed to live behind a turbo motor. Same thing for the converter. I have never used a glide since I had one in my old 68 firebird 20 years ago and it just had a stock inline 6 motor in it, haha. Are there any particulars I need to look for in a powerglide and the converter for my little 5.3 S480 combo? I hope to start cranking the boost in the near future into the 20-23 psi range and launch off a brake. I know we have some guys on here going really fast on a glide. Open for advice and or people/builders to talk to.

My suggestion would be to go to the track, ask around and see if there's a local Trans shop with a good reputation. So if something does go wrong, you pull it and you can deal with it in person instead of crating and shipping it out. As for a converter, this Yank I'm running now is a very nice piece. It drives around town so nice you wouldn't know it had the big stall till you hammer it.

My advice,
if you're going to drag the car as you state, pay up initially for an SFI approved case and bell housing on your new PG.
Won't need to worry about a flex pate shield and tranny shield/blanket that way.

As far as highway cruising on a 3.27 gear and 28" tire I cruise anywhere on the street no problem at all.
I am using a ProYank 3400 stall. I would say it seems a little tight but I have not hit it on the trans brake yet. I can build 6-8psi on the footbrake around 3300rpm

The 1 time I had it on the highway it was nice having the 4l80. It got 18-19 mpg and cruised like a dream with the lock up converter, but it is just not going on the highway much if any at this point. It is quickly becoming a dedicated track car.

Makes sense. Light car too. I agree with JAX04 on calling PTC. Seems they have a ton of converters in turbo car classes.
Lighter weight, less power to turn it, engine loads better, less gear in first for a softer launch.....seems like no downside except that you will need to get a new driveshaft and crossmember.

Nothing is spoken for til I I've cash in hand or a solid deal. Heck, right now you could even go for a ride in the car with it in. I am not pulling it until I need to.
Just so folks know selling it for $3000 with the circle d billet pro converter, dipstick, flexplate and -an fittings.

+1 on the SFI case. I have a BTE powerglide( http://www.bteracing.com/Transmissio...l#.VAnyxFduUTA ) in mine and I do not have to run a blanket or a shield. I have a PTC 9.5 in it and I have transbraked the crap out of it all season and it still works perfect.
FYI: PTC can sell you a powerglide and a convertor built to your specs if you want to keep it all at one place: http://www.ptcrace.com/transmissions...1dbd7d3e91830f
I thought I was not going to like the glide on the street but really I have had no difference of opinion from the three speed that was in it, I'm sure its because it cruises down the highway with the 3.25 gears and the 28" tall tire

What do you weigh? And how much power do you make? (trap speed)
I've beat the snot out of stock case glides for years and years. Always under 3k race weight though and around 850hp (150-160 traps). I've never broken/hurt/damaged one yet. I run the stock planetary gears as well. I did hurt a gear set one year but they were used and I suspect they were damaged previously. I've had multiple 20+ psi trans brake launches on mine.

The $1400 bracket glide is about all thats needed part wise. You can pick up nice "built" glides on Racingjunk.com all the time.
I second talking to dragster glide guys at the local strip. Then talk to the local glide guru and see if he can build you something. Usually cheaper that way. Mine was a little less than $800. And it has some extra totally unnecessary parts. Like a 10 clutch high gear, cast alum deep pan etc.
PTC makes a great converter (its what I run) but I've yet to see them perform like the yank 3400 series mentioned above. Stock48 and others have proven the yank stuff flat works on the "stock builds". I'd go with them if I had to do it again. My PTC was loose down low and had 4.8% slippage up top. Which is pretty awesome. But it was too loose down low and I had to push 24lbs on the trans brake to cut a decent 60'. Then all the power came rushing in 90-100' after the starting line. So I had it re-stalled and it's now too tight IMO. For a smaller motor at least. I plan to run a 6.0 behind it shortly.
Ls1-per-bp-ptc-9.5-th17-0-52 is what I started with. (loose) I changed the stator from a 17 to a 14. IMO with a 5.3 and that big S480 I'd look at a 15-15.5 stator with the same PN as above.

Hard to say what it will do honestly. The only time I had it to the track I had on my stupid Nittos since my slicks had a valve stem issue. On about 15 psi in 2nd and 3rd it trapped 133 with a horrid 2.10 60 ft due to no traction for the first 330 feet. Car weighs about 3200 with me in it with the 4l80.

Mine is a 17 stator yank 3,400 and I can build 7lbs on the foot brake under 3,200 rpm 5.3 s475 96mm and it drives like stock on the street. I haven't hit the track for slip % yet but it feels excellent so far. Have a local build the trans, there's no need to pay for a "name", these glides are as simple as it gets.

Well I do plan to turn the boost up to somewhere in the low 20s and use a trans brake and slicks....but it seems there are still a LOT of guys out there on factory cases under 1000 hp level. Don't know how many of them are breaking stuff though, haha.
