Angry Insane gear whine 9"

I have a Moser 9" with an aluminum center section. I ordered it with a locker and 3.89 gears. It didn't take that long for it to start whining. I thought it was mainly the locker making all the noise. Well after I installed the new motor and turbo I wanted to change the gears. I was hoping that this would also cure the problem. So I has a spool installed with 3.25 gears. The whine is back and just as loud. It does it between 40-70 then fades away. At 75 it is pretty quiet.

Now I don't think that both Moser and the guy that installed the gears both screwed up the same. My question is it possible that I tweaked the housing from launching the car at the track? I was wondering if there was a specific rear-end fluid that would help tone it down. I also thought of dyno matting the back half of the car. What do you all think is the problem and how and the hell can I get it to stop. I almost hate driving the car because of it. The reason I went with a 9" is to avoid this very problem.

pretty much the same problem with my moser 9 inch, makes noise and wont go away , it cant be normal my last 9 inch for my 3rd gen . never made a noise and i had 3 different gear sets 3.70, 4.11 , and 4.30s all were dead quite, it seems as if most people just live with all the noise they make, if i had a choice i would look else where then moser for a rear

I highly doubt it that you tweaked anything at the track. The Moser 9 inch is a very strong rear. I have spent over a million dollars with Moser, most of it on 9 inch rears, and I have had very few problems.
It seems that every manufacturer or rear-end builder lately has been having problems with gear noise to some extent. Two identical installs can result in one being quiet and the other one being loud. Unless there is something wrong with your rear that was missed when the spool and gears were installed, I would say you were unlucky in getting two sets of gears that are loud. Thicker 140 weight gear lube may help with the noise. Bob

^^^That's my thread. To the OP, I'm running 140w in mine and just had 4.11's put in. I also have a tunnel mounted T/A (don't know if you do or not) they do transfer alot of noise. They do seem to be getting quieter every time I drive it and put more miles on it. How many miles have you put on the new gear? May need to let the break in period go by if it hasn't already and go from there.

I bought the rearend at the end of 07 from you Bob.

I do have a T/A on the car and about 1000 miles on the new gear set.

There are alot of different gear sets. Whine is about how the two gears come together. They do make gear sets that hare better tolerances . Try one of them. they do cost more.

More than likely the gears are set up wrong. Pull the gear case and mark the teeth and post the pictures for analysis. The 9" is oh so easy to setup.

Pulling it out will take the better part of the day. I thought that the 9" was supposed to be easy also. But both Moser and the local guy had whine. This is the only guy in the area that does rear-ends. The only thing I have heard people bitch about was his price but I didn't think it was all that bad for how much of a bitch it is to get my DS out much less the third member. I will try the 140 weight first, then the dyno mat. Then have another gear set put in. More money wasted.

The only thing the 140 weight oil will do is cause additional parasitic power loss. Dynamat is a waste of time. Only fix is to reset the gears before they wear in to the bad setup.

Maybe try Ford gears. According to the guy that put mine together the aftermarket gears are addressed more on the driven side than the coast side. He said stockers are better for whine.

You're not alone my friend, mine have a pretty good whine to them from about 50-80mph....but you could just put me in the "learned to live with it" category. Kinda sounds like I'm packin' a supercharger under the hood, lol. No but on a serious note, I wasn't expecting mine to be dead quiet, especially since I have heim joints all over the place....torque arm, panhard, lca's.
