Default Needing a new rear end...Cost, ideas?

I have a 98 Camaro ss and I know the rear end is about to go. I took it to the dealer today for them to check it out, and the guy told me I pretty much need everything changed out ring and pinion all bearings etc. He told me they could do all of that at a nice price of 1900!?. I think not in my opinion, my pockets don't go that deep for a rear end. So is the a Bs price or is it really this much to have it fixed? I know it has to be done. I'm still new to the cars so I really don't know where to begin.

well your pockets will need to go that deep, but for that kinda money, you may as well get a new 9 inch or 12 bolt for just a little more. peace of mind is priceless, plus youll be set once you start modding the car. one less this to worry about

1900 for a fixed up 10 bolt? uh.. pass
you can probably find a used 10 bolt for under $300 and use it as a replacement until you have the $ for an upgrade.

for the dealer, not a bs price as they said pretty much need everything,labor/hours & parts(at their price) adds up. once they get it inspected/apart,they'll tell you you need everything even if you don't. they are in the business to make profit.
have someone you know remove the rear cover and take a look, could be something not as costly. if there is something failing,it's best to get that fluid out of there anyway,as metal contamination/particles in the fluid would be very abrasive to the parts that are still good/serviceable.

They already took it apart to check it out, which they did put new fluid and gasket that did kinda help because it was leaking. But still it needs to be fixed, my old mustang had 373s put in new bearings I believe that was it for around 7-800$

Wow. Bob I gotta say I'm impressed with all the one-place info on rear ends in your site. I now know where I'll go shopping for a rear (whenever I can get the money). I like that Moser 9" with Wavetrac. Accepting applications to Sponsor a vehicle?
