Default 8.8 vs 9" Parasitic Loss??

Do 8.8's suck less power than a 9" or are they the same in that aspect?

8.8s do not suck as much power as the 9". I have an 8.8 in mine but of course never had a 9" either so no back to back testing.

The 9" by design should eat more power due to pinion placement, but does it really matter? The only thing slower than a car that suffers from excessive drivetrain losses is one that can't make it off the line because it broke.

I am in the same boat with this question. I am looking at buying a 12 bolt or a 9" really soon. Either one should fit my strength requirement just fine but at my current power levels I would like to keep the loss low. Is a 9" that much worse than any other rear?

I just put a 9 in over the winter, car ran the same times 12.32-12.33 as it did the last time out with the 10 bolt.

The 8.8" is very similar in design to a 12-bolt, and from the link:

This strengthens the rearend assembly but at the cost of approximately 2 to 3 percent loss of power to drive the gears compared to a 12-bolt.
That is about as concrete of an answer as you'll find on the subject. Finding someone that has had both and took the time to do a before/after with the same gear ratios, etc. ain't gonna happen.

Agreed. Now knowing the 8.8 is a similar design to the 12 bolt, your answer makes more sense. Thanks

Car craft ran the same car with a 12 bolt, dana 60 and then a 9" back to back on the dyno, the 9" came in with 7 less hp and 4 ft/lbs less torque than the 12 bolt. So if a 8.8 is less efficient than a 12 bolt, I imagine it's not much better than a 9".
