Default Changing to Auburn Posi in my '01 - what type fluid?

Going with the new Auburn Pro. I did a couple of search's on different boards, but found many different opinions..

Would synthetic be best or regular GM stuff. Additive or no?

Any help is appreciated.

GM didn't start recommending synthetic until they switched to the Zexel Torsen. The owners manual for the 98 I used to have which had the OEM Auburn clutch type carrier recommended regular gear lube and 4 OZ (1 bottle) of the additive. Yhe Y2Y High Torque Auburn that you can option on a SS installed by SLP recommends regular gear lube and 2-3 OZ of the additive. I'm not familiar with the Auburn pro, but if it is a clutch type carrier, I would use regular and the additive.

Sorry for not answering your question in the e-mail ya sent me. I like the Redline gear oil. I've been running the 75w90 Redline w/ the Redline posi additive for right at 10 months with no problems. I'm going to change the diff. fluid before the Southern Shootout, so I'll be curious to see how it looks and how much metal is floating around. We have all of the Redline in stock if you decide to go with it, so just let me know.

I am going to have to disagree with 2xLS1. The 98's, of which I had one too, came with synthetic fluid from the factory and if you took it in to the dealer for the recommended 7500 mile change they put synthetic gear lube back in it with the bottle of additive. The Zexel Torsen doesn't really need any additive because it doesn't have any clutches. I changed my 2.73 gears on the 98 to 3.42's and put in the takeoff Zexel torsen and ran them at least 35,000 miles with no additive.

Not trying to **** anyone off, just a difference of opinion.

So, just regular GM with the additive will be fine?

Funny, I was going to the Auburn Pro also in my 02 TA and went to Auburn's Website...they said NOT to put synthetic lube in. Use regular lube and the posi-additive.

www.auburngear.com

Auburn Posi units don't have clutches either. Click on the link below and scroll down to the Lubrication notice.

Les

It is my understanding that the Zexel Torsen was phased in durring the 98 model year. My 98 was a 10/97 build date car. (early build) It had the OEM Auburn which was a clutch type carrier. The owners manual had the part # for the recommended GM gear lube printed in it. It was the part # for the non synthetic. Perhaps when they phased in the Z/T's, they changed the printing in the owners manual. I know that the company that makes the Z/T carrier says it does not require the additive, however the owners manuals for my 99 and 00 cars says to use it. It has been known to quiet the operation of the worm gears in it. They also list the GM part # for the synthetic lube. I've also read here where the Mosers that use clutch type carriers are instructed to use non synthetic.
And just because a dealer used a certain type of lube when servicing your car does not meanthey did it correctly. Just my opinion of course.
