That actually sounds low to have a mechanic do it. I would guess closer to $1000-1200. but it also depends on where you are.

2 shops around here get $700 labor. A cleanup mill is a good idea and you will need gaskets, bolts if stock, and fluids. It can add up quickly. While the heads are off I would have a good machine shop check yor heads over see if anything else is needed.

my friend got quoted $900 for a head gasket on his honda.

im just glad i didnt throw the keys in the shop's dropbox because i went back the next day, limped the car home and began the work myself. instead of dropping all that $$ on a repair by a mechainc, im putting it towards some 243's

got every disassembled, just waiting for the gaskets, bolts, heads, etc. to come in.

ps- i never thought id miss driving stick

i must say, swapping heads isnt as hard as it looks. not intensive, but just time consuming. i got everything label, took pics of where everything goes, etc. defintly learned a lot in the process too.

I blew mine a year ago. I spent $30 on the GM gaskets, and another $50 I think on the head bolts. I spent about a week doing it, mind you I was getting home at 6 everyday and only working on it for about 2 hours a night. Not hard, just requires you pay attention to what your doing. Get on LS1howto.com and use the head and cam swap guide. It made life so much easier. No way I will pay someone to work on my cars anymore. Rip offs!

I think I ordered them straight from GM. I thought it was going to be alot more but it was cheap. If someone told you $300 walk away... Look on Texas Speed. The prices have gone up slightly but your only looking at roughly a $100 for head gaskets and bolts from them. This is for the OEM stuff, which works just fine.
