As soon as oil gets hot a few times it turns black. I just changed my oil after 1 year and about 1k miles, it was black. Now I am running Royal Purple and it is already dark purple.

Only way to find out if everything is all right is an oil analysis. The color after 3k miles of hard driving is not an indicator. Mind you I have never had an oil analysis.

on all oil changes that i've done at 3k, on any many vehicles, the oil has always been black as hell.

It's never gonna come out transparent, unless you change it twice before driving the vehicle... lol

My Jeep's the same way, BTW.

Black oil only means the oil is doing it's job suspending soot and sludge. It's a good thing. Color of oil is no indicator of useful life remaining.

The owner's manual in the LS1 Camaros cite 5w-30 as the proper oil, Metalmechanic.

Your oil is fine, just make sure you change it every 3,000 miles and sooner if you go to the drag strip often.

I saw a thread the other day about what oil this guy was using and what is best but say my cars got 170K...is Mobil1 5000 a good oil? I believe the weight was 5-30 of course I’m at 3K now and I’m about to change it cause I don't like going 5K miles on 1 change cause I get on my bitch often, lol. I was just wanting to know if I should just pay the $ and go syn. is it better for high mileage cars like mine?

i wouldnt switch to synthetic at 170k miles personally, you will probably start seeing oil leaks

the first number has nothing to do with the thickness (or thinness) of the oil when at proper operating temperature.

if you have leaks, you should fix them.

5w30 is not inherently thinner than 10w30.

I run mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 and I have 177,XXX miles on my ride and she still runs like a bat out of hell, lights the tires up upon request. No smoke at startup or any other time. Yes she does drink about a quart between oil changes and I change oil about every 3K miles. I see no need to switch oils now. I don't beleive in running 5K plus miles on any oil. Yes oil changes run about $50 bucks but so what, small price to pay if you ask me. It beats dropping a new motor. My advice find something your car likes and stick with it, change it regularly buy good filters and you should have no problems. Royal purple, mobil 1, penzoil platinum all run about the same price. Can't speak for the German castrol because I have never seen it on the shelf.
