What to do with my old LS2?
Hey guys, I recently bought an LS3 from NastyC6. With the new motor in, I have a complete LS2 sitting in my shop. I may be closing up soon and moving everything to the home garage so I have to make a decision.
According to the shop that did the initial diagnostics, the knock was coming from the number 6 cylinder area. They said that the bearings underneath were "melted", though I can't see anything that would indicate it. I don't know if they were referring to the rod or main bearings, or both.
Seems like I have three options:
1. Rebuild it
2. Sell it complete
3. Part it out
I'd probably end up spending $2-3k to rebuild the short block (new crank, liners, rings, bearings, etc) which I really don't want to do, but dang it would be nice to have an extra LS "laying around" for a project. Selling it complete would be the most headache-free way to go, but then I'd have to arrange for crate shipping. Parting it out would bring the most cash, but then I deal with the headaches of individual sales and shipping.
If you guys were in my spot, what would you do?

you could always just keep it "as is" for a while to see if you could do anything with it. I would think that if you rebuild it and try and sell it you will loose money. So I either part it because the extra time would be worth the extra $$$ for me. Or just hold on to it

Ooh thanks for reminding me. I have to charge tax to Florida residents. I think that works out to at least $1500 or so. Uh, special tangible machine parts tax service charge VAT, yeah, thats the ticket.

I actually might do that. I started tearing the thing down a couple of days ago to see what I had. The hatch on the cylinder walls looks just fine, though I haven't cranked through a complete rotation to see all of it. The heads, pushrods, lifters, rockers - all look perfect, not a bit of wear. The usual oil residue from the PCV but thats it.
I haven't gotten to the caps yet so I haven't seen if there's any damage down below. I know these things have iron liners, and they can be resleeved by a decent machine shop. Are there any good online guides to putting a performance LS2 together, in case I get the bug?

Need more info
You raise a very interesting question and i would like to answer you for different scenarios. If you needed the money... part it out. If you want to work on a project car... rebuild it. If you don't have time to deal with it... sell it complete.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. My economy has dictated that this motor will be parted out. I'm thinking about selling the heads (with rockers, lifters, retainers, etc) and cam as a "kit" for those who want to upgrade their LS1, and the intake, TB, fuel rails, injectors as another package. I'm going to hang on to the short block and see if I can rebuild it as the basis for a future project.
