Default Heat soak.

Guys,
I was in bumper to bumper traffic (car cruise). My wife was wearing flip flops and explained how the floor was hot! Obviously exhaust and engine heat. After finding a place to stretch out i lifted the hood on the ta to let it cool off. Not overheating or anything just did it. the air box was really hot, obviously.

So would relocating the IAT help if the under hood is heat soaked?
and Would the coolant bypass help if the it is all hot as well?

Yes it helps as i have read many posts but if under the hood is HEAT SOAKED do the previous questions stand?

Correct me if i missed something.

Thanks for and helpful replies.

Did you feel it? How hot was hot? do you have any exhaust on the car that could be closer to the floor boards? Generally these cars (and cars now a days for the most part) run really hot so there going to give off a lot of heat.

After I get my SS home and in the garage I usually raise the hood to release any heat build-up. Been doing this for years, don't know if it helps, but I figure it might help to prevent hoses, anything rubber, etc. from deterioting quicker.

Those things you mentioned will do nothing to change the running temp of the engine. You would have to do modifications/upgrades to the cooling system (fan settings, t-stat, radiator, water pump).

All is stock.
I was hoping to help performance? But does it even matter when everything anyway is hot. Hot meaning heat buildup from a running engine

The coolant bypass doesn't cost much or take long to do so might as well do it.

if you move the IAT it will run worse. it needs to know the temperature of the air entering the engine, not what it is somewhere else.

if you move it and it thinks the air is 60* rather than the actual 100*, it will adjust fuel trims to 60* ambient air temp.

Lots of good information in this thread. Yeah.

Set your fans to run at a lower temp and you'll see engine bay
temp come down. My low speed fan runs full time once engine is
warmed up. My engine bay temps are pretty moderate.

IAT has nothing to do with running the fans. It will be pushed
by engine bay temps. Relocating it to outside is good for a cold
air setup car. Engine bay temp does not relate much to inlet air
temp unless you're sucking up engine bay air. Fact is that IAT is
going to be wrong under some condition or other. Factory setup
makes it wrong every time you sit at idle. And it takes a lot of
seconds at high flow to pull it right (and quit pulling timing).

Hot starts will be much better if you relocate. It just has nothing
to do with the hot floorboard situation.

The catalytic converter is right under that hump on passenger side probably why she felt the heat.

One of the biggest changes I noticed was when I switched from coated headers to stainless steel. I eventually got the stainless coated to help keep the engine bay cool

heat soak is a pretty board term.. i see it more applied to turbo cars and intercoolers... i never really thought about it from the intake postion... I dont know if being hot makes it heat soaked....

I guess i need to understand that the car is tuned under these hot conditions. not in the sense of an aftermarket tune either.
