How bad is it? Mine does a little but not too bad, when i removed the air tube from the manifold on my last spark plug change i found that the gasket had crumbled and gotten stuck in the tube, i cleaned it and got rid of my SES light that i was never able to figure out, however it makes a LOUD ticking now for the first 3 min or so (while the secondary air is working) on a cold start then goes away. I just ordered a new one, if i were you i would check that out.

Mine ticks, but it's more of the sewing machine noise everyone talks about with cammed cars. 129k

I've got a 2000 Z71, 5.3, with 151k on it. It has the famous cold start knock / piston slap, but only does it for the first 20 seconds the truck is running and it does it worse in the winter. It won't hardly do it at all in the summer. This sounds more like the bottom end is about to come apart. I usually sit in the driveway till it stops and go about my business. Doesn't matter what oil or filter I run, same outcome.

Do a search, it's a very common problem and seems to not affect the life of the engine.

Same here with the tick. My buddies call my car ratchet engine Wait till you get the mysterious whinning sound after 2,500 rpms for the first 20 minutes. It'll drive you nuts.

Look, I know you guys are going to think this is a plug for a product, but in ALL SERIOUSNESS, since switching to Castrol Edge, my engine has quieted down SUBSTANTIALLY.

I first tried the stuff in my Escalade, refusing to believe anything was better than Mobil 1, but Wally World was out at the time, so I did the Escalade with it.

Night and day difference, seriously, no joke. I then did Edge with the 01 SS, and man guys, much quieter.

Give it a try. It won't disappoint.

There are various ticking type noises the common ones are from normal valvetrain operation or exhaust leaks.

I know this is LS1tech but the following article on oil seems to make a lot of sense and applies to this subject even though it is from a turbo dsm 4g63 shop. It goes over how all of the modern oils are primarily concerned with gas mileage and emissions and that all of the oil you buy in the normal stores is GF-4 including Mobil 1 which is not an oil for racing engines. http://store.forcedperformance.net/m...otor%20Oil.pdf It also includes a list of good racing oils and how much they should cost.

I switched from a synthetic oil to conventional castrol 10w-40 and my car got alot quieter. Every so often it will tick a little and fade away. ls1's are known for this. I wouldn't worry to much about it though unless it is excessively loud. good luck.

The amount of clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall are the primary causes for the cold start "tick/knock"

Piston Slap is another ticking noise even new pistons only sometime fix the problem.
