is it red/black?....pretty skinny?.....

this would be the wire that pretty much tells the battery to charge, if it comes undone your batt. will die pretty quick

The small red wire on the back of the alternator is the exciter/field wire.

It sends a small amount of voltage from the battery to the alternator when the ignition is in the "run" position to create an electrical field and "excite" current production from the alternator. The alternator will not charge properly (or barely at all) if this wire is damaged/disconnected.

so if i am starting to get a fluxuating charge (sometimes under 13 volts and sometimes over according to the gauge) and this is the 2nd alt that has done this, the exciter wire could be the problem? is there somewhere i can get a new plug/connector for this. as i have had to repair the plug once already.

It could be the plug in that case.

You can get the plug at the dealer. Its like $20.

the male end of this exciter wire usually has issues, it comes out often.....mine was tilted slightly and my battery started dieing.....the wire itself is pretty fragile....on some cars its black and thicker and on some its red and thinner...for example.....my friends boosted ws6 has a black wire....and my 99 ta has a red one

for those exp. problems, check the wire, the load and the connector itself.....if there are any other problems feel free to pm me and ill explain more.....WS6NJAX....u know where to find me

It could just happen after three years of perfect operation after the new install? I am the original owner and never had an issue for 6.5 yrs!

I just had it bench tested. I was low (about 10) and then jumped up to 14 it kept up at 14 consistantly try after try but I went ahead and just got another one anyway. I figure even if it is an intermittant problem it was better to be on the safe side.

In and working, a little over 13 at idle and kicks up when the lights are on accordingly.

Yep, bad alt. I kind of knew there was more to my problem when I pulled out the rear bolt and got a handful of brake fluid with it!
