When cleaning your k&n or whatever filter you have, never spray more oil on it then what the directions say...
We just bought a used celica for my wife and the last owner over oiled the filter and the oil got sucked onto the maf and fried it. I didn't even know it had a k&n in it until the check engine light came on and i scanned the code to find out it was running lean. Opened the air box and it was obvious what was wrong. Replaced the maf and now all is well. I'm just glad i'm the only one who touches my ls1!

Better idea, just stay away from the K&N filters, IMO.
I used to use a K&N, then a Holley. Now I only use paper.

I had a K&N on my car, other than that its stock, I switched to a paper filter and have noticed a gain in MPG, with the K&N I would get low 17's and usually 16's but With the paper filter I get solid 17's and occasionally 18 MPG.
other than that there is nothing different, but because of the MPG difference im sticking with paper.

K&N filters for the lose.
i'm gonna pay for a $65 air filter that nets 0-1 horsepower![Rolleyes](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/rolleyes.gif)
it's the biggest scam on the market since the turbonator. the only situation i can see them helping is in nitrous/FI setups, or maybe 408 strokers laying down 700 rwhp. for a stock or even H/C LS1, they're useless IMO.
if it's a full K&N CIA, then that's different, but as for just buying a filter, that's a waste IMO. paper filters WAY better and you don't have to worry about oiling problems, all for less money and the same horsepower.

K & N sprays just a little oil on the filter before they put it in the box. It migrates throughout the filter before you buy it. But because the cleaner kit comes with a big spray bottle of oil, a lot of people spray both sides with way too much. And want to get the whole, wash, dry, re-oil task done in a couple of hours. Wash, let it really dry, spray a little oil, and re-install. The cleaner kit should last through several cleanings.

Although it is true that I have always used K&Ns for all my CAIs (and pods on bikes), I also buy them for everything else for one reason. I buy it once. I do not buy them for the hp increase, there is none. Anyone who tries to tell you that is misinformed.
If you like to continue to buy the same thing over, and over, and over, ad nausium, then go paper. It is your choice.
This issue will never be resolved. We all have our opinions, and are entitled to them.
Peace.
