I just happen to be selling a set of shortie's with a y-pipe for a 99 SS on ebay. You can check it out. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMESSE%3AIT

yeah full length headers u can gain a lot of power. i read that shorties actually choke the motor, not sure if its true i didnt bother wasting the money. save up money for somehting else. or get some modified stock manifolds. u might as well keep lookin for latest lsx info that might be the way to go. if u get over double the power for less than half the price of an ls6 then do that...

Shorties are basically a waste of money power gain wise, except maybe for the BBK shorties (did they ever come out?) that were mentioned a while back, not sure if they were ever released though. They were 1.75" primary, which should offer *some* gain over the '99 manifolds. Otherwise, the other shorties on the market are good for basically nothing on a stock motor other than better appearance.
Honestly though, you won't see much of a gain from the intake either on a stock motor, stock manifold car. Dollar for dollar ET wise (if that's what you're looking for), you'd probably get a better gain out of some drag radials if you don't already have them.
Of the option between the shorties or intake, if you ever plan to mod the motor, get the intake....

put it this way, your gonna pay the same price for shorties as you are for pacesetters and at least the pacesetters will give you a better plateform to work on then the shorties will.

if your going to stick with stock manifolds then look into an ls6 cam, comps 212/218 and other small duration cams.
you'll need both ls6 intake and LT's to get the most out of 80% of the cams out there. the biggest you can go safely and pass cali smog is 224 114 but you'll want headers for that.

It has a shot i think. Im thinking headers and ORY=15hp asp=6 LS6 intake=10 that would put it at 370hp and it may run rich after the headers and there may be 10hp in the tunning. If it doesnt make it o well.

If you really want to go for shorties, find a used set on LS1.com or LS1tech for $100 and that's it. I wouldn't go over 100 as you'll only gain Max 10hp at the wheels and that's if you are lucky. They do flow better than stock manifolds but not by much. You won't be able to get the most your engine has to offer if you ever decided to slap a cam, stage II or III heads, or forced induction with the shorties. If you went that route you would HAVE to get at least mid-lengths or even better, long tubes.
I know I've been searching on a budget as yourself. In a way I'm leaning towards shorties but in the long road I want to hit as close as I can to 375 at the wheels running NA and shorties isn't going to cut it. I'm about 320 at the wheels now through an A4. Shorties probably would bring me between 325 to 330. Then what LS6 intake, from what I've read, it isn't worth it unless I decided to go with a heads/cam package.
And there again, I'm screwed with the headers unless I go mild. And in that regards, I won't hit 375.
I would expect 350 would be the max you could see if you went that route. Maybe alittle less.
But if you wanted a mid 12 second car and leave it at that. . . .not concerned with high HP then me personally would go that route.
However if you feel the need for speed and more power, then shorties = BAD!!! Get LT's if you can.

My advise would be to do the smaller stuff first. Go ahead a get the LS6, it's cheap (especially if you install it yourself, and even cheaper if you find one used), home port your TB (if you havent allready), install a cutout (cheap as hell). Then by this time you should have made up your mind about playing with emissions.
Hopefully, then, you come to your senses and stop giving a ****...buy the LT's then move on to the bigger more expensive things (like heads and a 224 114) In that respect, you may not be able to pass a visual (very easy to get around) , but you should pass the sniffer no problem. Good Luck to you.
