Aftermarket MAF's don't suck, they do work. They just do not work as a bolt on and go in about 90% of the cases. That thread is good, and explains the inhernet problem. When you port out your MAF or open it up to flow more, you are basically letting more unmetered air in, since the MAF isn't "seeing" it. The wire in the MAF is cooled by the flowing air, and the rate of cooling is calibrated with the area of the opening of the MAF to measure the volume of air flowing through. A MAF only samples a small portion of the air, and the calibration extrapolates that out to tell the ecm how much air is passing through that orifice.
Now if you do any LS1edit tuning, you can recalibrate for the larger MAF and alter the fuel tables and whatnot to accomodate the additional air and add more fuel. Then you will see a gain.

like nhra said, aftermarket MAF's aren't total POS's, they just need to be calibrated for. just like anything else in your engine that your pcm can't autocorrect for....ie cam....gear changes...et cetera....

well...that was quite an informative thread...i think thats quite on the money...but regardless of your ability to tune a MAF, i'm going to stick with my stocker unless my motor ever reaches a point where it becomes the choke point....heaven forbid

The problem with aftermarket MAFs is that the
manufacturers will not provide valid flow /
frequency data usable in tuning. That, and most
people do not have tuning tools. That, and the
majority of the mass market ones are hype driven
and miscalibrated for marketing purposes. For
this they deserve to be punished.
But a descreened Delphi 85mm off eBay for $40, and
a generally available 6.0L truck MAF table, work as
well as any other 85mm piece of pipe in front of my
motor.
