Default Those Without Ram Air Hood But Want Ram Air Come On In

Since I had to remove the FRA because of Trans cooler I was stuck with no more Ram Air????

So I came up with this idea of making the stock hood Ram Air It was one of the coolest mods I came up with yet!
It took about 4 hours total including raising the stock air box.
I have more pics and I will do a write up if any of yous guys is interested.
I would rather have a Ram Air hood myself but I do not have the $$$$ to shell out now and the FRA was to good so I came up with this which in my opinion is better than the FRA!

I was thinking of something similar.. but using round holes that can be closed with rubber freeze plugs for when I'm not at e-town or inclement weather.

Did you improvise any baffles?

Yes I did heres a pic of what I came up with--1/16" plastic piece held on with a couple of pieces of solid 12 wire for now.

Very cool! Can you tell us exactly what you used to raise the airbow, and the tools needed to cut the hood. Thanks.

Yep, there are quite a few of us on here that have done that to our hoods. Much cheaper then buying a ram air hood <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

The holes were cut out with a jigsaw and smoothed to shape and deburred with a dremel.
I posted the same mod on LS1 and what a bunch of worry warts <img border="0" alt="[whiner]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" />
I try to help people out with the knowledge I have and boo hoo.
Jim98ta I looked at it as if they can do it on ram air hoods then it can be done on ours to!
They also mentioned I ruined the integrity of the hood but cutting. If you look at it close I left all gussets in place and left the center in place on the front?

I will do a writeup and let you guys know when it is done.

Thanks, Dave <img src="http://@66.93.54.197/images/pictures/Daves/RamAirPics/RamFrontAfterPrime.jpg" alt=" - " />

You may want to think of sealing the openings to the airbox - I've seen that to be worth another 10th.

Cutting it like you did will not effect the integrity - you did it right leaving the center under the latch and the gussets.

Are the standard hoods metal or fiberglass? My WS6 hood is completely fiberglass - I didn't have to do this mod, but I have removed the baffles and made a way to put the large one back in quickly for rainy days. Next I am going to make a seal.

Standard hoods are metal.
There is a 1 1/4 gap between the filter front and the hood back! I'll have to go back to the drawing board on an idea to join the two together when hood is closed?
Any suggestions?
Do they seal this on the Ram Hood?

I think this mod is awesome. Further you should seal each opening individually to give the incoming air as much velocity as possible. Right now its being spread throughout the entire section of the hood. If each hole individually sealed, and then sealed to the air box this setup would rock. Perhaps a plastic insert would fit in each rectangular section you cut. And for the hood to the lower box, I think you could simply find some nice adhesive backed rubber or foam to do the job up, and maybe even go on to consider a ws6 lower airbox.

Thanks guys on the comments.
Mike, I am in the middle of fabing something for that velocity stream now. I wanted to wait and post this whole project when I got done but it was to good to not say anything. This way is better, I get more ideas from yous guys and everyone can see how to do it as it goes along.

Thanks Again
Dave

Farmer, it would be interesting to see you track test this setup with Free ram air and without.

I'm looking forward to seeing the completed project <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

With the FRA from under I ran 13.5 at 103.
Sometime in aug. I am going back to the track and I'll let you know how the new hookup is.
