Default Need to upgrade 987 springs for .612 lift, what springs?

I got a brand new set of TEA 1.5 heads sitting here and i have a 238/248, .609/.612 XE-R @ 112 camshaft.

I think the cam is to big for the springs (Comp 987 standard dual springs TEA).

What springs do i need to swap on these heads?

Comp 26921-16 will do the job well. Pricey, but a very good spring and the kit comes with new seals, Ti retainers, and seats.

Good springs, though.

As far as Patriot springs, I have no clue. I know they don't manufacture them, they have to come from somewhere. I prefer to place my trust in the manufacturer, not someone who re-brands. Just my opinion.

get the crane dual springs. the are working great with my 242/248 cam up to 7000rpm's you will need new seats and retainers. still cheaper than comps though.

I have the ISKY 295d. They drop right in. Running a .634 lift cam for about 15k miles now w/o any issues.

I am in the same boat as you. The comp 978's are a direct drop in replacement to the 987's according to TEA. I decided to make sure I didn't have any problems and have a set of Crane 832's that I am going to put in. This is only with a 596 lift mind you.

I've been running a comp camp .612/.608 on my motor for just under 15k now without any issues with comp 987 springs. Had the springs tested about 3,000 miles ago and they were providing the same spring pressure as when I installed them.

~.590 lift based on typical install height is about the max lift for a 987 in a typical application.

~620 lift or so based on typical install height is about the max lift for a 978 in a typical application

I'd probably go with 978's for the application listed above as they are reasonable springs to use and won't bust the budget. I think they are ~$110 for the springs will need seats also.

That can be very decieving however, because at stock install height there is very little seat pressure open and closed (about 114lbs closed/350lbs open) compared to Comp 921's (I believe around 140lbs closed/400lbs open). I may have to switch out my Crane 832 dual springs because of that in favor of Comp 921s...might be a good idea to run the Comp's with very agressive cams.

I will be trying to achieve Comp 921 like seat pressure by installing my Crane 832 duals at 1.7 instead of 1.8, but I have to watch my coil bind. It may or may not work.

With as light as the LS1 valve train is, you might not need all of that seat pressure you're talking about. I've seen the Crane duals in some fairly radical installs, they should be just fine for what you're doing.

Then you are extremely lucky cause they are only rated to .600 lift!

I would go with the 921 springs, thats what I am going with on my LS6 heads. I know its more money but it could also save you a lot of money in the long run if something bad were to happen while using a spring thats only rated at .600 lift
