Default Ls1 block

I'm kinda new here is there a vender that sells replacement blocks or machined 5.3 blocks bored to the stock 3.898 bore? I just bought a new one from summit racing and it came full of rust pits. Yes they will replace it but probably with one that the warehouse boy scotchbrited the rust off of it.i still can't post in the wtb section so any help is appreciated. Thanks

Try WS6 Store. Very good people and good prices. If they don't have it they will know where to get it. They are a sponsor here and have helped a lot of guys like yourself.

I was just talking to another vendor about 2 more summit blocks that had issues. A hone would get it cleaned up...just a ball hone. We do not have any spare 5.3l blocks at the moment. Is the summit one bored to 3.898 already?

Default Sonic Testing

Hi Coupe, there are a few questions YOU should ask first ?
I NEVER bore a block without a Sonic Test report done first.
I NEVER specify a GEN-III block
I NEVER bore an AL 5.3 greater that 98mm. (3.865)

When you purchase a block, from Pantera or other quality provider, a Sonic Test report is provided.

As for the rust, this is caused from Hot Tank cleaning.

The most common size I specify for 99mm is 3.903, good for NPR Steel Rings.

My guess is that it would clean by a hone.

I would ASK Atech to PAY for a hone, less than the cost of a return shipment.

ya I could hone out a couple 1000 miles out of it but that's not what I paid for. The rust would most likely take. .004 or .005 to get rid of. With the short skirt piston slap issue I hear this motor has anyway I don't want to add to it. The catalog said the block was sonic tested , bored and honed with deck plates. They forgot to put oil or cosmoline for rust protection in storage. I live in a small town 130 miles from even a half decent automotive machine shop so my options are limited. I did mic the cylinders one is a touch under but the rest are right on at 3.898.

Default RaceTec Pistons

Hi Coupe, MANY here just want to sell A "shelf" item.

This is NOT my case, I can provide a Forged RaceTech piston with NPR Steel rings (+.005") with the correct 99mm (3.903") piston/bore sized at the same cost as the shelf part.
The BEST method to save the file fit time.

I would ask them for the Sonic Test report ?

NO, the block can corrode in the Hot Tank within minutes.

I am a vendor/customer for Atec as are MANY Machine shops.
Surely IF I were asked, I would do your hone for them with no cost to you.
The chosen machine shop could "will call" your block ?
Would you like my help ?

What I have is a 04 ls1 Gto motor with 41,000 miles with a cracked block. All I wanted to do was get a block and put It back together . I didn't want to get into the expense of replacing the Pistons and have the whole assembly rebalanced. The shipping back and forth is what's going to kill me. Do you have a block with a good 3.898 bore for sale

Hi Coupe, your question should be easy, NOW stated.

My Method, measure your pistons for reuse.

Measure the Deck height.

A 5.3 AL GEN-IV block would be the core.

The Final Bore could then be PERFECT.

You aren't going to lose any mileage. Just run a dingleberry hone in there and put it together. It takes all of about 3.5 seconds. I know you didn't pay for rust but that does not look like a detrimental amount or even close. I wouldn't let it cost me more shipping. Chances are, you could get a lesser performing block the next gl around from someone else that looks fine to the naked eye. This is just my opinion but I bet most machine shops would agree. Good luck whatever you decide. Don't forget to leave a review for Summit's product and how they handle the situation.

LM7's are iron blocks. That would add a lot of weight to the front of a GTO.

Adding 100 extra lbs to a 4k+ car will slow it down. you be VERY surprised how many people ONLY want alum blocks and will spend way more just for the weight savings. It does change how the car corners and steers as well as weight transfer.

In the real world where some guys do more with their car than run at the strip, 100# over the front end can affect handling to a pretty fair degree. So yeah, it matters.

When I went from my old LS1 to my current LQ9 block I couldn't tell any difference. Maybe for all out handeling and whatnot it makes a little difference, but for a weekend toy that's just street driven I don't think it matters much

If you can feel 100 lbs in a car that weighs over 3k lbs you need serious therapy. I'm the fussiest SOB you could imagine and I can't feel it. A lot of what you guyz "THINK" is all internet BS.

Now I can feel a huge handling difference in my Ws6 compared to my y87 v6 Camaro but the Camaro way lighter all around overall. I would say in the turns the Camaro would kill my WS6, the WS6 is a handful in turns the Camaro drives through with ease.

I race circle track cars, and I can assure you that 100 pounds in the engine compartment makes a HUGE difference in the way a car handles. I routinely make weight and percentage adjustments WAY smaller than 100 pound increments, and it most definitely has an effect.
