Add to the list a blown head gasket, burned piston, cracked sleeve...
It really doesn't matter what causes it, it's what you are going to have to do to fix it...and that won't be evident til you tear it down.

Squirt a little oil in the cylinder. If compression goes up it's rings, if not it's valve or head gasket (although headgasket would be low compression and you'd most likely have antifreeze in the oil).
