Question Cam change ?

have been wanting to do a head & cam swap for awhile but havent had the funds. i was thinking about doing a cam only change and update a few other components while im in it like timing chain etc. would it be worth it? cause eventually its going to have heads as well. also if i do swap the cam now and then go heads later will i have to use a smaller cam without aftermarket heads than i would if i went ahead and got heads?

also when going with heads who are some good brands that yall have used and is it best to have them custom done or order them complete?

well see i was looking to run the biggest cam i could and it still be streetable but if i dont change the heads i wanna know is i will have to run a smaller cam than i would have to if i change the heads.

can you build up the stock heads to be as good as aftermarkets or aftermarkets better?

Gotta know more about your setup to make any recommendation

Daily Driven, or weekend car? I see you have both...
Stick or Auto? gears, stall?
Supporting Mods? Intake, headers, exhaust?
What are your goals? Dyno #, Track ET, Street Stealth, Rowdy Choppy Idle?
What kind of package do you want to end up with?

You may as well try to do the cam once if possible. The right cam can be installed 4 degrees advanced until you get the heads you want. Then setting the combustion chamber size correctly will allow you to install it straight up for the best gains with heads.

edit - Streetable is all relative to the quality of the tune and what you are willing to put up with. Some people don't mind 4400 stall converters and open exhaust, while some want as much power as you can make with totally stock manners. What are you willing to tolerate.

i drive it as much as i can and its a M6 with 4.10 in stock 10 bolt, will be changing to fast 90mm intake and nick williams 90mm tb when cam is changed. i want it to be as fast and have as much power as i can get out of it with just stuff like heads, cam, timing chain, new oil pump etc. i dont really wanna go into the internals like pistons, rods etc. right now. oh yeah the 02 SS is the one im talking about doing this too but lately ive been driving it alot and im sure i'll want to more when i get that stuff done.

Don't Rex your car....You need to evaluate what you are going to be using the car for mainly and how you want the end result. Don't get a huge cam thinking you are going to make retarded power. You will, but it will be much higher than you are going to want to spin that stock bottom end.

FWIW: I did a cam only swap and then a year later did heads. It was a great idea if you don't have the cash at the time. Glad I did it that way, so I know how the improvements were.

You absolutely do not want to skimp on the valvetrain for sure though. you can have a 400 rwhp cam only car and add the good heads and make it 440-450 with the right amount of money.

Get a high lift and a mild duration cam like a 230/234 .610/.625 110 (just an example) If you want the power, and useable at that. you could probably do a bigger duration due to the fact that you are running a steep gear.

Yeah, 19° of overlap isn't for the timid either. That looks like an MS3 on a 110. Does this cam need reliefs?

TRex fits at 242/248 @.050 Duration .600'' 110 lsa Dont see why this one won't but always check!!!. That much overlap needs a good exhaust system , 4.10 gears it should be good to go!!

Too Big IMHO, but "I drive it as much as I can" doesn't necessarily mean Daily Driven.

Anything in that range will require a good tuner, but much more than the 230/234 on 110 that orangeapeel mentioned will be somewhat of a bear in stop and go with the best tune.

My cam only swap came in at over $1000.

Cam package was $689 from TS&P. I also bought a ported LS6 oil pump and LS2 chain and sprockets. Dont forget about the gaskets, too.

I did the swap myself so I saved a ton on labor. Also... factor in the little variables.. I lost one (go figure) valve lock and had to buy one ( .89 cents ) Dexcool, oil and filter, dowels to hold the lifters up, at least one pen magnet would be handy, ect.

is building the stock heads up worth anything or porting and polishing them if i know aftermarket heads are coming later on?

what needs to be changed or would be best to go ahead and change while doing the cam swap?
