What Heads W/ Tr224 Cam
#2
I'm puttin on a set of Port/polished & milled .018" 5.3L heads this weekend. My cam is a 224/224 .581/.581 114. I'll be using 7.400" chromemoly pushrods & stock rockers also. Along with FelPro gasket# 9284PT.

i'm looking at 2 companies myself for my TSP 224 .566 cam .i like Livernios Motorsports LS6 Stage II heads for $1295 or a set of PRC's LS6 Heads with cc 918's . They claim to add up to 50rwhp with those cnc 243 heads. Thier price is around $1220.00 with options. But it also depends on how much lift your cam has also.if it's btw 560-566 ,you should be fine with these heads. if it's btw 575 -590's ,then the LS6's or 5.3 with the .650lift springs would work great for you. i don't think you can really go wrong with anyone of these guys or anyone else for that matter. every one of the vendors on here have very numbers with LS6 heads or 5.3L's. the choice is up to you. good luck.
p.s. i'm not claming to be an expert ,but having a little insurance on the springs lift is a good thing is what i've been told.

Original question TR224, so my answer is the Budget solution and plenty for that cam.
Now if you want to change cam, that is a different story.
Then buy the heads you can afford and then choose a cam that works with your head motor combo.
The cam is the last thing you choose because they can be custom tailored for the overall combo.

Personally for a smaller camshaft like the 224 I'd really look to something like the cnc ported PRC 5.3l heads. With a smaller runner & a little bit of decking you can add good across the board power without giving up low end. We can deck the PRC stage 2.5 heads to 59cc chambers for you at no charge! Typical PRC 2.5 5.3l heads sell for $1199 with double springs, or $1100 with 918 springs! At that price you get complete stainless 2.02 1.57 or 2.02 1.60 valves!!!
Checkout GM High Tech performance if your set on running LS6 heads. We had a recent article in there that shows detailed gains from just the installation of our PRC LS6 cylinder heads.
It would also be very benificial if you'd spend some extra time searching the dyno results section of ls1tech. I think when you research dyno results you'll find the PRC heads will get you the power you expect.

Shoot, for a budget, any brand LS6 style heads...or 5.3 heads for a bump in compression.
With a smaller cam like that, you may also want to consider milling and running a thinner gasket for more power out of a budget combo!

LMAO!! @ this thread!! Love the sponsors pumping themselves and some of the responses to the cam in question.
If you want budget and the best service you go Patriot and Gunnar.
Next in line for budget reasons is Texas Speed.
Then the rest of them line up unless you want the best then its AFR. I know someone with MTI stage 3 heads and he is very happy with them.
The best are still AFR's. I've spoken with a few vendors on here about heads and one thing is for sure. Tony Mamo at AFR knows his ****. Others might know what they are doing but they were so concerned about disiing TSP and the rest of their competition that I wont buy from them ever... like TEA.
One thing you will find on here is brand loyalty. The hardest thing to discern on here are facts from opinions. Dedicated head vendors are ahead in the game. Thats all they do and all they do to make a living is sell heads. It makes a difference in the end product from what I can see and I've got my 3rd set of heads coming.

Milled to 59 cc would equate to too much DCR, wouldn't it? What would be the safest mill for this combo, 61 - 62 CC?
