Default Gen 4 Rod? I thought I had gen 3s

Ok so I'm new to the ls motors, built many old sbc, ford's etc. anyways I bought a 2004 lm7 and to my knowledge they were gen 3s correct? I learned after I had the short block together that gen 4 rods were better, I had to pull piston and rods back out to read Gap my rings because I'm going boost so while I was there did some digging into the rod differences and it seems mine fit the gen 4 description, there 15mm thick and squared on both ends? any info is appreciated

generally, 04+ are gen 4 internals.

Is there a c clip keeping the pin in the piston?

if you have gen 4 rods youd know, theyre much more beefier! they almost look identical to a scat aftermarket rod
check out this post for the difference

Hey guys thanks for the info, mine are pressed in pins no retaining clip, and that's the article that led me to believe I had gen 4 rods.

04 was the only year that you might find a Gen 4 rod with a pressed pin.
They were phasing out the old rods but hadn't finished phasing out the old pistons, so the Gen 4 rod was bushed for a pressed pin. Those aren't very common.

The Gen IV rods are not normally pressed pin, they're floating pin. He was wrong in that post as you can clearly see in the picture the piston pin bore has notches at 3 and 9 o'clock for removing the c-clip.

there are some mix-match "gen 3.5" piston & rods out there.

check the last picture in this post (#337)

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...l#post19439674

clearly a gen 4 shaped rod.
no locks or provisions in the piston for them & pin is press fit.
