Default lt1 possible opti not sure sputter help READ plz thanks

When my 95 t/a warms up it starts to sputter pretty bad like more than 15 min of driving. Ill get to about 1500 and in between then and 2k which is where I shift the car starts sputtering. Could it be the opti? Or is there something else I should look into? It only does it when I've been driving for 15-20 min traffic when I get it upto cruising speed it goes away. Its while under low end acceleration.

This sounds kindof like what my 96 ta was doin. In my case it was the opti. Does it eventually die or no. Mine did and wouldnt crank till the car cooled off.

No check engine light, but its weird I doubt its the plugs cause it only acts up when its hot. It also takes a while to start longer than my old but has 40k miles less so idk. I just hate swapping out optis but if it is that I have no other choice. Any other ideas before I go buy it?

Tomorrow ill let it run for a while longer after it starts sputtering just to see if it dies out or not and let you know.

Does it take even longer to start when it heats up? Could be the ICM acting up when it gets hot.

It sounds like an opti. Mine hesitates just a tad during mild acceleration, and from what i was told and the research I did here, it all pointed to the opti.

I am having starting issues and everything is pointing to a bad fuel pump. Try having the fuel pressure checked. A clogged fuel filter could be giving you issues too.

Those are just a couple things i could think of. Good luck and I hope you get it figured out.

check your plug wires. i just replaced mine because they were arcing and got them routed so they wouldn't rub on anything. well my car started to sputter a little so i popped the hood last night and it was like a light show in there. my point is, check the easy things first even if it seems unlikely.

Let it warm up in my driveway took it around the block to make sure it started doing it then brought it back home, parked it away from the light, checked for sparks and nada. Thanks for the tip, I'm probably gonna end swapping the opti, though id hate to but it seems to be the only logical thing to do. Its my one and only daily driver and i can't let it leave me stranded.

Check the opti wiring harness, mine was ef'd. I re-did it and it cleared the problem right up. ALso, go out at night and start the car, have someone watch for arcs from the plug wires.

No one suggested o2 sensors??? If its running rich and only acts up in closed loop under mild acceleration, then it could be the o2's...

Well I dont think anyone will argue that Optis are not the most reliable. Any LT1 owner will have to deal with it sooner or later.

However, you may be surprised at how many other "smaller" issues could be giving you grief. Another member said it up top, start with the smaller and less expensive parts first and work your way up. Mine is a daily driver too, so I understand the panic related to not knowing the exact problem.

Since it is running rich, check the codes and see if the car throws O2 numbers; along with that i would check for arching.

Another member mentioned the Opti harness. That has been mentioned many times as the problem. As a matter of fact, i believe that that's the issue with my Opti. Once the harness conector goes (corroshion followed by a loose connection), the car can stutter, hessitate, and act sluggish.

Just to rule out O2's, unplug them and drive the car again. I don't remember when the EGR valve operates at what engine speeds, but it too could be an issue.

Did some more looking today, noticed the water pump located directly above the opti, has a leak. So I'm almost certain its the opti now. I checked for codes and nothing came up. Friday if it makes it till Friday I'm gonna do the opti swap. Its my personal first time attempting this myself so if anyone knows any good sticky's or write ups for it post up links. Thanks.

Yes, it's heat related. When mine was going bad, it ran like a champ for the first 15-20 minutes, but once it got hot it started to stumble. Purchased a used one for $10 and been fine since. With that said, a leaking WP is not good news for your opti.

^^^^ agreed, that blows. When you do replace the opti, be sure to seal it. Many don't, and a short while later a bit of water will ruin their barnd new opti.

And of course, check out and fix your water pump leak..hopefully its just a bad seal and not the housing. Wouldnt want that same leak to ruin your new opti.
