Default Lt1 cam questions.

Alright so i have a bad lifter in the car so im thinking about throwing a cam in it while im tearing into it. Im wanting to get everyones opinion on a good cam for a daily driver running stock heads. Does anyone have any dyno numbers with their cam and stock heads. Im thinking possibly the cc503.

There is a nice informative sticky all about cams you could read. Everyone is going to tell you different things. Of course you have the variables of stall size gears and other mods that come in to play when choosing a cam. When I was originally making my plan I was going to just go cam only with the xfi 466.

cc503 would be a good choice.

Just a heads up. If you decide to change your cam, remember that your going to be doing a lot more than a "cam swap." Research all the things that go into a proper cam swap, like timing chain, rockers, springs, PRs, gaskets etc. You should, but you don't "have" to make sure that your fuel set up is right, spark plugs are the correct type etc. Then on top of all that your going to need a proper tune. If you are aware and prepared for all this then yes, a cc503 cam is a good cam or if you have some specific needs hit up Lloyd Elliot and talk to him about choosing a proper cam. I called him plenty of times before I decided which cam I wanted and he even helped me with finding a proper set up. GL

AI 226/234 over the CC503, especially with a 6-speed.

For me my actual driving style made the decision a lot easier.
I DD my cars and spend 95% of the time cruising around at 3K rpm or less,...there are times when I'm idling down the road in a non load situation at 1200rpm.
I don't want the motor surging or bucking at that RPM,...with a 6 speed you FEEL it. With an auto trans it might not make any difference, especially with a higher stall speed.

I also like to hear a lope at idle.

I went Lunati VooDoo 211/219 and run the lighter Fidanza flywheel so that it lopes at bit more at idle. In my 383 it pulls like a freight train and I shift at 5,500 when I'm on it.
It's a bit more sensitive on initial start off(you have to feather the throttle more), and stalled a few times at first but after a while you learn.

I'm sure I'm giving away some high RPM power, but for me this setup works as a street machine.

I am running a 226/232dur @ .050 and .606/.603lift. So far i love it. No numbers and I need a wideband to really start tuning so my post is kind of pointless. Really just saying you dont need to go "cookie cutter". CC503 is good, but wouldnt you rather be different?

thats the same reason im trying to steer away from the cc503. I know its a good and proven cam, but it seems like everyone is running it and id want something different too. However i was considering the lunati voodoo 60122 (231/239@50 .535/.550). OP, what do you have done to your car?

I would go with an AI or LE cam, one of their 'off the shelf custom cams', I have the LE 226/230 in my car, and I love it, great drive-ability, I can let the car idle in first gear and no surge, can cruise around at 1200-1700 and no surge, mat it in second gear and it moves out slightly hazing the tires, and still is not properly tuned. The idle is lopey too.

The thing is im on a tight budget and i dont want to spend to much on the setup. Where are some good sponsors websites to check out for cams?

Then you may want to wait another month or two to be able to save up a little more money and during that time, just do a bunch of research on different cams, and look for deals on springs, lifters, and rockers. The cost of a cam swap is a good bit, so an extra 80-100 bucks doesn't mean much, especially if it means getting the cam that will make you happy after it's all done.

This forum needs to be changed to "AI support... and a little bit of LT1 tech."

A used 503 will be cheaper than a "custom" cam and you will run the SAME TIMES.

funny, I always though this was the 503 cam section, with other LT1 tech section. It was always the only cam that you could run on stock heads was the 503 and any other cam would end up being a waste because 'you can run the same times'. ****, you can run 11's with just bolt-ons. I bet you can run the same times with a LT4 hot cam, or a crane 227, or LPE's 211/219 as you can with a 503. They are all good cams, it just depends on what the person is looking for. When choosing a cam, custom cam is the best way to go, cheapest, no, but you get what you wanted out of the cam.

Why are AI shelf cams still referred to as "custom?"

Here's a good read on cam's. It's tailored to the lsx crowd but the principle still applies.
