Well I'm not positive about this, but I'm pretty sure the 'Vettes have IRS, which means no solid 10-bolt to break. That gives you a pretty good platform to start off with. Start with a catback, some headers, and an intake system.. once you get past that, look at some suspension (depending on whether he wants to auto-x or drag) goodies and possibly a cam and heads.
LT1tech.com has an LT1 Y-Body section, but unfortunately the forum isn't very active.

i read they have reall small gears in the rear end like 2.7's something or around there...so if u say the rear end is pretty good how about some 3.73's with a stall...will that rear end take it. Also it has the lt1 motor right....so i could do about 2 free mods....thanks man...oh am i correct though.

I love this planet but the free mods start with a plasma cutter and the collector on the Y-pipe. Damn emissions
Oh well, you can bypass the coolant through the throttle body, move the IAC to the front of the intake, and a 160* stat is about $10 away from being free.

You-d be hard-pressed to find longtubes for a C4, so some good shortys would be a good start. The vette intake is terrible, a good CAI/ram intake does wonders for them. Rear end (dana) is pretty strong, some gears wouldn't hurt.

Yes, it does have the LT1 motor.

It was a joke about cutting the exhaust off before the cat . Actually I think its IAT, buts its the intake air temperature sensor. It's prone to heat soak because it's placed too close to the engine. I believe the corvettes have a straight intake tract over the radiator so if you locate it past that point it will give a better reading.

with the cheap mods and a set of muffler eliminators he car could run high 12's or low 13's very easily! mid to high 13's dead stock.
also A4 vettes have the same problem as FBody's do. weak rears Dana 36's can hold from 11.8's to 13.0 and let out anywhere between there. i wouldn't recommend a lower gear due to the fact the pinion has more bite on the ring gear.
Easy mods to do:
FULL tuneup w/ AC Delco Rapid fire plugs, TB Bypass, Cut lid w/ K&N filter, descreen the MAF unit, 1.6 RR's, muffler eliminator's, pulley set, LT headers, (factory manifolds are very similar to shorty headers and there are companies such as http://tpis.com that make good fit LT headers for these cars. shorties are a waste of $) and LT1 edit.
with these mods it will probably run mid to high 12's pretty easy. if you plan to run DR's don't do a stall unless you want to break things. i pull 1.80 60' times in my 87 TPI vette with stock 1600 stall and 2.59 rear gears. his is probably 2.59's or 3.07's. write down the RPO codes either under the center console lid or under the back 2 lids behind the seats then match them up at

Man I think I learned more about my lil cousins car after reading all this (plus the websites) then my car… kind of disappointed though about the weak rear end…oh well he’ll have much more fun with a 12bolt…oh my cus says he wants to change the auto for a manual…what do you all think of the conversion…I hear for racing auto is better…no miss shifts…but I have a hell of fun with my m6 on my z.

My vette's an auto. I swapped in a Dana 44 rear out of a 6 speed car with the 3.45 gear. It's run a best of 11.5 @ 121 on a 100 shot + the N/A mods. 2nd stage numbers coming soon.
I've got a complete dana 36 with 3.07's if any one is looking for one.

No worries though, L98s can be pretty good motors if you can get them breathing well up top. My friend had two L98s, one was in 12s, the other in 13s. Best possible thing he can do is swap the TPI intake manifold and runners for either an LT1 intake, or some other kind of aftermarket intake. When I was first looking at buying a car I really wanted an L98 Vette.
Other than that, there are tons of cams available, just as many as there are for the LT1. Definitely want to swap out the heads as well, they're very restrictive. Good luck.
I'm going to try to get my friend to post in here and give you some suggestions.
