Default Buying new clutch, need help choosing

Hello, I new here. I bought my 1998 camaro SS a few weeks ago and im having problems with the clutch. It started 1 week after I bought it. I replaced the master cylinder and it worked for a week buy it is sucking in air through the slave cylinder and just started leaking out of the bell housing. I need to replace that so while im there im going to replace the clutch too, I just dont know what brand of clutch kit to buy. The car is just a daily driver, mostly stock other than some bolt on's and I don't race it(I might trying road racing next year though). Im also on a budget. I found a SPEC stage 1 clutch on the WS6 store for $270. Is that a good clutch because all the other stage 1 clutches are around $400. Also I plan you have the stock flywheel resurfaced so would I need shims?

Thanks

I have used many spec clutches and don't recommend them. Try a monster level 1 or even a ls7 clutch first.

i would suggest looking at a monster clutch. im loving mine though its a stage 2. also get a tick master and speed bleeder while you are working on the hydraulics. that speed bleeder is a lifesaver

Nick, You can find counltess customers that have had great experience with our products and countless vendors that offer them. A Stage 1 kit would be agreat option and our kit includes a shim and a measurement sheet that helps you insure that you get things setup properly. Give me a shout and I will be happy to assist you. Thanks!

I think ill go with the spec stage 1 clutch. I should fit my needs and is cheap enough. What else should I do while the transmission is out of the car? It has 68,000 miles if that matters.

Its always best to replace the slave cylinder too since the transmission is out. You should also resurface the flywheel (assuming that it hasn't been excessively cut previously). We offer an OE replacement slave if you need it. Just let me or one of our many providers know what you need. Thanks,

I would have probably said it a lot nicer but yes, you shouldn't base it off price. It's $270 most likely because it's not a full clutch kit and the others are a full clutch kit that comes with a flywheel. Don't just go with a pressure plate and disc and throw it in the car with the stock flywheel and call it the day. Go right and get a full kit with a new flywheel because if you reuse that OEM flywheel and surface it down, there is less material heat dissappation and you'll just end up creating hot spots all on your new pressure plate and you'll be back on the boards here asking what went wrong and you're back at square one. It's not always about price.

This is what I would recommend:

http://www.coloradospeed.com/monster...s-p-12522.html

or

http://www.coloradospeed.com/gm-lsxl...el-p-5396.html

I prefer the Monster first because it comes with a billet flywheel whereas the GM comes with a new stock nodular iron flywheel.

if you go with this mindset then so is a spec clutch and your better off with a factory LS7 clutch

monster has diff levels, im sure they have one that suits you if you want to go with them

from what ive experienced with a few different cars. Spec clutches are ok for budget performance but i really didnt like them for daily use... they were always too touchy and didnt really have a smooth engagement like the monster clutches. mine has a Level 2 and it drives like mine did stock (better clamp force and stiffer pedal of course) i got the 2 so id have some room to grow but its still not a puck clutch

We build 7 different stages of clutch for this application and a Stage 1 would easily meet Nick's needs. Drivability is relative to the clutch that you choose and this means understanding the differences between the Stages. A Stage 1 would have no drivability issues and would provide plenty of capacity for this car. Our kits are intended for use with properly functioning stock hydraulics and we offer an OE replacement slave if needed. Let me know if you have any further questions.

As for the class-act that posted above insulting the OP and making claimes about our parts...you have got to be kidding! One post to your name and you make a post like this. I wonder what your motivation is?

Beyond that, I would think that a post like this would have been addressed by the moderators...

Of all the clutches I personally have experience with, I have heard more chatter and people complaining about their spec units than any other. Just my experience.

If I were you I would buy a Ram.

Chatter can result from a number of factors including proper break-in, flatness of the flywheel used, clutch stage selected, etc...as a result its imperative to choose the kit that best suits your needs and wants with an understanding of how your expectation and reality connect.

I'm not trying to bash you guys, you guys took great care of my best friend when he burnt up his spec clutch in his boosted civic, you guys got his a higher rated disk and sent it to him for free. I was really impressed with that.

On the other hand as far as our cars are concerned I have always been disappointed with the feel and chatter of the specs I have heard or driven.

I like how the monsters are ONLY sold with the matching flywheel... i wouldn't trust a resurfaced with a performance clutch. plus i got my level 2 on sale for like 500 shipped with slave and all install parts

Where did you get a stage 2 with the slave cylinder for only $500. The cheapest place I found a stage 1 monster is $479 but add slave cylinder and bolts and its up to $575

Spec always took care of me but a clutch rated at 880 ft lbs of Tq should atleast hold 500
