Default How many think some folks can't drive an M6?

1)How many think that catching the wrong gear is part of the learning process, but: the dealer should fix any damage anyway?
2)How many of you think that some folks catch the wrong gear, FUBAR something, then scream about warranty work (I KNOW I caught the right gear)?

Just curious, as I've been keeping kind of a mental tabulation on some posts I've seen on various boards.
Enquiring minds want to know.
-and for the record, I once put a Muncie into 1st instead of 3rd and totaled an engine-

its very easy to misshift the t56 tranny.

I have misshifted a viper on ocasions, but luckily 5 instead of 3 and 6 instead of 4. (error on side of caution, when not your car)

The T56 in these cars are easy to do it as well, but i know to be VERY careful, due to the large repairbills that can arise.

Sure, many people mess up while driving, i have, but never when racing, thats why i dont speed shift.

Well, my first experience with bent pushrods, the dealer replaced them under warranty because I told them it popped out of third (a known issue) getting on the freeway (little did they know ). But I bent 4 of them AGAIN within 3 weeks after they replaced them, so I just bit the bullet and replaced them myself the second time. But the second time, I put in hardened rods and 918 springs, so I doubt I'll be bending any more anytime soon.

The reason I have an A4 now is because I got tired of missing shifts in my 98 Formula M6. I missed the 2-3 shift 3 times when I had that car, each time grabbing first instead. I was lucky not to bend any pushrods (I pulled all 16 out and checked them) but I did bust a set of 4.10 gears (which was an expensive lesson since I foolishly had the GM dealer replace my broken gears)

I swore after that I would never drive an M6 again, but a short while later a friend of mine with a 01 Firehawk Formula coaxed me into making a couple of quarter mile runs in his car, and on my second pass I did the 2-1 shift again!!! So now I've definitely sworn off driving an M6, I simply don't have the skills that I used to have, for some reason. When I raced my M6 twice a month I seemed to be pretty good at it, but as soon as I got out of practice that's when the mistakes kept happening. There are no mistakes when it comes to racing an A4.

LOL @ Patman.

Can you say gun shy? I knew you could

My current T56 has survived for two years now and is just now starting to grind a bit.

When I first got my M6 02 vert last year I was having problems shifting 2-3.I keep on thinking it was a Muncie 4-speed which was the last manual trans I had. After a few close shaves with it I started shifting with the wrist and not the whole arm.Finesse not banging the gears and that helped.I got 4000+ miles on it and I am doing a whole lot better.I should be ready for the strip this summer.

When I was banging off perfect powershifts all the time in my 98, life was good, but as soon as I got out of practice and started missing shifts, I think some sort of mental block went inside me that prevented me from shifting as good from that point on. It's strange because before I had the 98, you'll recall I had a supercharged 87 Mustang GT, and I easily made 6 or 700 quarter mile runs with that car, and rarely missed a shift. Mind you, the T5 tranny (as weak as it may be) is very easy to powershift.

Maybe if I'm lucky enough to win the $17.5 million Super 7 draw tomorrow night, I'll buy myself both an M6 and an A4 Corvette, and practice practice practice my shifting!

Having driven a 12 speed double-clutch Eaton/Fuller for years I can honestly say I have missed more than a few shifts. I haven't missed any in my T/A, but that third gear is a funny one. It has to go in all the way fast, or you're going to do some damage. I'm glad I'm reading about other people's experience with the A6.

Eaton trannys are more forgiving. Bigger components that are harder to break.

Sounds like these 6 speeds can be a pain when they get some wear. I bought my Z28 with an A4 mainly because I've logged many miles with a stick and wanted a change.
The worst time I ever had was the shifter/linkage in a '65 Gran Sport I owned back in '68. 50% of the time when you put it in reverse it would engage 2nd also. Kind of embarrasing when you were backing into a spot and had to get out and manually move the linkage to neutral.Never could get that thing adjusted right.

Too many horror stories about m6 shifting?...you have to be a bad *** stick handler to avoid any misshalfs...and even then...you will mess up!!
That's why I chose an automatic !!!

Practice, Practice and more Practice.

This is the key to shifting a M6 Hot Rod.

I think that I can shift a M6 pretty well and I missed 5 shifts at the Thunder Shootout.

The new Jaz race seat in the Hot Rod helps out a bunch.

Don't worry about missing a shift or two. Even the best do it!

A trans must be built to handle a certain amount of abuse. According to GM, they powershifted a T56 600 times in a row and then took it apart and looked for damage. It was AOK.

I wouldn't race an Automatic car. I know I will never be the quickest out there, so I race for fun. Manuals are more fun.

Every time I go to the track I miss a gear or two. But usually when the pressure is on, I don't. My quickest ET's have always been running against someone I had to beat. Nice thing about a Z06 - I missed the 1-2 then the 2-3, and still ran 12.8 and whipped a Cobra.

Get a PRO5.0 shifter and it will cut down on misshifts. Just my .02

Man I knew people missed a shift here and there, but it appears to be more common than I thought. I learned how to drive a manual by myself in my 2000 T/A and to this day not once have I ever missed a shift. I've had the stock shifter for one year and a pro 5.0 for another. The stick is stock length and have yet to make it a short throw so maybe that could be a reason why I don't miss shifts.

The closest thing I come to missing shifts is when for some reason my tranny refuses to go into 3rd. All I hear is grinding for a split second then I immedeately chuck it back to neutral. Good thing its a rare occurance.

Unless your speed/POWER shifting like a madman at the 1/4 mile track, don't worry about missing shifts.

I bought my 2002 M6 Z28 back in July without even KNOWING how to drive a manual transmission car(yes, I had NO prior experience with any stick shift vehicle). It did take me a few months to get comfortable with the M6(struggled early), but it was well worth it. I don't street race, but I do drive my Z aggressively around town and go WOT as much as possible and have yet to miss the correct gear(knock on wood). As long as you really concentrate on what your doing you ought to be just fine. And yes, the more you practice, the better you'll get.

Missed gears at the track are a giving. You're trying to ram and jam so quick it's gonna happen. You can do some real damage though if you downshift a gear by mistake. Missing gears on the street shouldn't really happen much under normal driving. Although sometimes I find myself daydreaming and forget what gear I'm in or go to 5th instead of 3rd. I love the M6 but will someday have to swap to an auto if I ever want to run a good time.

I've owned a manual since I started driving some 12 years ago. Granted the TA is my first true performance vehicle, but I could powershift a ford escort with the best of em.

The thing I found trouble with was the 2-3 shift. It wasn't that I was missing the gear, but rather that it was difficult getting into gear quickly. When I race, I end up pushing/pulling the shifter to the next gear midway through and then hit the clutch, lift a little, and keep going. The 1-2 shift happens really quickly wihtout a hint of a hiccup, but the 2-3 would grind every once and a while and sometimes it wouldn't go into gear at all.

Well, this was all with a factory clutch and hydraulic setup. Recently that blewup, and I decided to upgrade to a Mcleod kevlar/organic single disc setup with an adjustable master cylinder. This clutch setup has ended my problems with third gear grinding. I have the engagement point about 1/3 travel from the top and that allows me to engage/disengage the clutch quicker, helping to shift quicker.

Moral of this story, if your having trouble shifting quickly, try changing your engagement point of the clutch. It might be too close to the floor.
