Default T-56 Strenght

How strong is the t-56 transmission? At what type of power levels do they seem to go away and die at? What are a guys options for strenghtening the tranny? I am asking, because a local machine shop build transmissions for my fathers oil feild equipment, said that they could build me a custom gearset, synchros, and shafts to replace the original internal, but with a much stronger alloy steel. What are your opinoins on that?

I've heard they can handle well over 600hp.

The weak link in these transmissions is the main shaft...specifically the output shaft.

I know multiple people that have twisted them when the car is put on tire. I twisted one myself (even after it had been cryo treated).

From what I have heard it is possible to use an output shaft from the trans in the 03 Cobras, but it requires the tailshaft of the trans to be cut-off and then re-welded. Norm at Westech told me that the Cobra shaft is even larger then the shaft used in the Vipers.

But the viper main shaft will cure that problem along with some machining to the tail housing to except the 30 spline shaft and yoke. The next step will be a 300m main shaft that I'm working on having made to cure those problems for guys that have big power with good tires. Will be testing that shaft on our T-56 equipped supercharged 383cid 96 Impala that makes 740rwhp-680rwtq. I'll keep everyone posted on the results this summer.

So would it be worth the investment of having the gearset, shafts, syncros machined up? I think this would cure any issues of parts breakage. This tranny will be used in a car that is being preped for One Lap, so it needs to be strong, and it needs to be able to take one heck of a pounding. At least for that one week. It will be seeing at least 500+ hp with a C5R 427ci engine that will be bottled for another two hundred horsepower. So I need to have a strong tranny, also are there any clutch ideas as to what brand to use? I am leaning towards a McLoed peice, but haven't really decided yet.

Chuck,

Have you looked at the 03 Cobra shaft? Get in touch with Norm at Westech...you guys might be able to share some ideas on this. He knows a couple of people that are pretty high up in the BIG 3 develpment arenas. He did a lot of research for me. You guys might be able to help each other out.

LQ4,

I would go with the McLeod dual-disk if I were you. I had that clutch in a street driven car making 550hp and 600ft/lbs. and it held up like a champ. When I took it out to swap to the TH400 it looked almost brand new...probably 95% life left on the disk, flywheel looked perfect. Just make sure that you get the billet master cylinder from them as well.

LQ4,

There's no need to machine synchro's or gears, the tail shaft housing is the only part that requires machining.

Thanks for posting that, that is some really good info.

I never has a problem with the input on my car, just the output...so maybe the ford shaft fixes the output problem but adds a input problem.

It looks like the viper shaft might very well be the way to go...or you can give up the 6 speed and go with a TH400 and Gear Vendor Overdrive like I am going to do.

Good luck with the TH400! I'm going to try to keep mine a 6 speed by all means possible, but I'm not modded enough yet to worry about it breaking. I know a guy who had numerous rebuilds (no viper parts) to no avail, so he switched to a built 4L60, and likes it a lot. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
