Default Dyno disappointments HELP!!!

Ok well I went to a dyno day at JKS performance here in mansfield tx. I was curious as to what my car is putting down to the ground. Mod list is ported maf ported tb, slp box free ram air mod, mid lengths, off road y pipe and a borla muffler. The car was smoking black and grey smoke like crazy on the upper rpms, and a little bit on the lower. Its running way to rich. and only put down 267 hp and 293 tq Its a auto, and I was on a mustang dyno. Does that sound right, or is my car a **** turd? Does it need a tune, just for those mods? and would it benefit me at this time?

dang those are some really low low numbers, check your plugs and do a compression test.

and get a mailorder tune, its cheap enough to gain a lot of power. a tune will gain power even on a bone stock car, much less with mods.

Def get a tune. I'm not a dyno expert, but I believe Mustang dynos tend to read a little lower. Any SES lights? How's the maint. history?

Its on the original up, but it still runs perfect, and it sits 99% of the time. A tune up is next for sure. The check engine light is on, but I checked the codes and they are all emission related. The car uses no oil and holds good oil pressure for a 98, 50 at start up and 40 all the time after warm up. What about a can of sea foam? I did notice the other day some fresh new carbon build up on the TB and MAF. I had just cleaned them 100 miles ago.

our dyno (dynojet) is known as a fairly stingy dyno. our 98 vette put down 287rwhp bone stock through an auto.

I would say your mustang dyno numbers arent out of the realm of possibility since they typically do read lower than a dynojet. they may be a little low, but I dont think they are ridiculously low.

do you have a graph? with the A/F on it? that would tell us more about how rich it may be running.

It was ran on a mustang dynometer, the A/F at 3420 rpm was 14.50 when it got to 3676, it dropped between 12.00 and 11.50 and stayed there until 5984 where it hit 11.50. Whats going on with it. Ive got a bad A/F curve

11.50 means that thing is getting a HEALTHY dose of fuel and is the 1st place to find some lost HP. Here locally my tuners Mustang dyno was tested back to back with another local dynojet. Drove from the dynojet to the Mustang Dyno and the Mustang dyno read 15HP less.

It may be true, but that still doesnt explain why it was throwing tons of black and grey smoke out of the tail pipes.

Well black smoke is from fuel and is without question an indicator of a rich condition. Grey well ya got me there.

You would have thought I was shooting a 175 shot of nitrous on it. The question now is, If I do a tune up, sea foam the engine, and get tune will this solve the problem? I took the ported maf and tb off and just put the stock ones back on for now.

I'd say you need to have your car dyno tuned and that will wake it up along, if the tuner does a good job. I also see your an A4 which means your number will be a little lower than a M6. If you lean it out a bit you will notice a difference.

You answered your own question when you mentioned all the smoke it was belting out. How are the plugs are wires? Change them, seafoam the bitch, then see how it runs.

On the sea foam, can I use the main brake booster line? I am about to try and do it. And a tune up is coming next week. The plugs and wires are original, so Im sure there shot.

Use the line coming directly out of the brake booster. Usually pour about a quarter of a can slowly and then dump a quarter quickly so the motor bogs and dies. Let it sit for about 15 mins and then start it up. Should smoke like a son of a bitch. Drive it around hard to clean all the sea foam out. Also put the other half of the sea foam in your gas tank (full tank). This is how I did it anyway.

I am really worried about doing this myself as well. I was told some water will do the same thing. Minus puting it in the gas tank of course... and don't let it die. Takes two to do it I was told. I'd like to see more about this. I will search and see what I find. GL OP.
