Sorry if this has been beaten to death but I really want to do it once.

Sorry if this has been beaten to death but I really want to do it once.
I have a 3" SLP catback with a bullet resonator which I can't stand. I would like to remove the resontor and install a transverse muffler while running the pipes out of the back. The car has the cats & factory exhaust manifolds. I really want the old school sound (im old 45 almost 46) of a flowmaster 50 (don't care about rusting) but I read somewhere that the 80 series is no good. Is that true? I was thinking about an aerochamber but I like the tone & the zero rasp imo of the Flowmaster better. If it flows a couple of hp less I can live w/ that. I may get headers next year but need to leave the cats so I have no headaches I don't want to go crazy w/ a new full dual setup. What should I do. If it makes a difference the car will be Frost tuned by Tuesday.
I guess there is no throty bullet. That would be too easy. Please help and thanks.

I am familiar with the "old school sound" of which you speak. I can tell you first hand that you won't get that sound if you retain the cats. No matter what muffers you use (or even none at all), there is a certain mellowness/smoothness that is characteristic of an exhaust system with cats. If you want it to sound old, you'd have to ditch them IMO.
I currently have the setup you're suggesting (Flowmaster with stock manifolds/cats) on my daily driver '02 car. It doesn't have the same old muscle sound as my catless, true dual '71 SBC car does with Flowmasters. Having said that, the '02 does still sound very nice though, but it's a more modern, mellow tone than my '71.
Hope that helps.

Personally, throw away the 80 series camper muffler and grab yourself a super 40 series or a thrush glasspack or cherry bomb or something like that. They have that deep old school rumble and have a good flow design so they dont rob as much power. Just my 2 cents.

IMO, based on what the OP posted above, glasspack style muffler/bullet isn't going to give the sound that he is looking for if he retains cats and a Y-pipe. This will be even more mellow/smooth than his current SLP resonator.
A single Super 44 in the stock location would sound pretty good, even with stock cats, if you don't mind the single outlet (maybe tuck a turndown up near the bumper so you don't really notice it). I've thought about doing this on my Camaro before, but it might not look right on a Trans Am. It still won't have the old style chambered echo and cackle of a catless system though.

Better flow but it is a lot less work and money to replace the resonator than put a transverse muffler on your car and if your going to do that your better off putting a new cat back on their w/ a transverse muffler. If you have the SLP Loudmouth 1 thats no resonator thats just a straight threw pipe to make look like its a resonator the last time i looked down one.

I don't have any sound files of any of my cars, but there are tons of videos on line of LS1s with various exhaust setups.
