Do a search for "factory freak". Some people, myself included, believe that this term is thrown around too much without looking at the circumstances behind the event that defines the car as a "freak". I'd just say that the conditions were right and the driver was good in this particular case.

I am going to have to call the mythbusters on this one.
Factory freak my foot.
I think this modern day urban legend has grown out of the factory ringers that GM used to turn out for the magazine guys back in the heyday of musclecars. The most famous of all IMHO being the 64 389 gto that Wangers gave the guys which actually sported a 421.
Sue me, but my stomach wretches every time I hear someone mention factory freak on this site. All ls-1's are basically the same out of the factory.
Like anything mechanical there are slight variances from car to car. On average low to mid 13's is typical for ls-1's.
A car that goes 13.0's is not unusual for an ls-1, specially if you have good air, and a good driver.
Now the next time someone mentions a factory freak I think I will

I believe there are factory freaks. We built a T1 SCCA LS6 which had to remain within factory tolerances. The GM tolerances were wide enough that we could maximize them and still remain legal. I think that if enough tolerances stack up in your favor, you could have a factory freak.

To an extent, yes. But not to the level that we did.

I do believe a car can come out of the factory a lil stronger than normal though, reason being..variances in quality of parts. Think about it this way, theres an assload of parts involved in the construction of a car,not all will be 100% every time. More than likely very tiny variances, but they add up, good or bad. On the other hand, the initial break in and maintenance of an engine plays a big role in a "freak" also. A good break in followed with a religious maintenance schedule will almost always net better performance.
