Intake question.
Alright, i'm confused about the intake part of my engine. Below the stock lid, there is NO WHERE for air to get in. Its closed solid shut. How the heck do they get air into this engine? And if it's any, it can't be much. I think they make an air intake that has a compartment that goes down by the radiator, i've even seen some threads of people doing this custom. My question is, if i upgraded to an SLP lid how am i gaining anything all i'm doing is changing the plastic basically, i can't see how any more air would get into the engine this way. Would i be better off just getting one of those K+N cold air kits..i mean theres no lid ther just the filter itself so more air would be able to get in. Sorry for the newbish questions.

It can't be closed solid shut. The air gets sucked in through the air filter. Underneath the air filter is where the air comes from. The aftermarket lids just give the air a more direct path to the engine.

Yep, i just looked, the bottom if completely shut off but on the front of it there is an opening. It seems to easy to mod this car just by looking at it. My first mod will def be a lid then i'll probably go with an SLP loudmouth exhaust.

Is it bad to start the engine without the air filter and lid on there? I started mine up and revved it up a bit and got a lil backfire from the exhaust, sounded kinda cool lol. The stock exhaust is just too damn quiet, especially at idle. And at WOT it almost sounds fake..

In your sig it looks like a 93-97 camaro. I wouldnt suggest starting the car without the filter in there, that's what makes sure you don't get any trash in your motor.

It probably won't hurt it, but I wouldn't suggest it, and try not to drive it like that.
That being said, I've driven our Cavy Z24, with no hood, across country with no air filter. I also have driven my cars frequently around the neighborhood with no air filter, etc. So it more than likely won't hurt it, but I wouldn't chance it.
Edit....I would chance it, but that's because I lack common sense. You shouldn't chance it....

Well the LT1s use a more traditional intake system than the LS1s, so I'm not sure.
At any rate, I'd do one of two things.
1) Buy a SS hood, and SS ram-air intake. Looks amazing, and will help as well. However not exactly cheap, especially for the ~10hp you might get.
2) Buy a CAI kit, there are a lot available. Cheap, work nearly as well as the ram-air. However they don't look as cool as the SS.

You can cut out the bottom portion so the air coming up from the radiator gets directed in there. Its referred to FRA or free ram air. I wish whoever had my car before me didn't do it, it just makes me cautious to drive in the rain.
