P1336 is the Crankshaft Variance code. Is it's function mainly for EPA reasons?

IDK

All I know is when I tune, I only turn off the DTC's for things removed (ie. !AIR, !EGR, !CATs, etc.). Misfires, crank variance, and what not are left alone. If there's a code, like a misfire code that pops up, I'd much rather increase the misfire timing detection tables a little instead of totally disabling it. If there's a problem with the O2's, I'd like to know. Sometimes, I think they kill the annoying DTC's because they don't want to deal with the common problems that arise (ie lazy O2s on LT headers).

^^^Ditto

Plus I doubt P1336 is emissions related.... generally P1xxx codes are manufacturer specific , they add them in to aid in their tech troubleshooting, not for the government

I think the problem is, certain emissions faults will
inhibit the crank relearn from running automatically
as it should, and then you get the code for crank
learn not done. The right way is, kill the other codes
cleanly. But there are some faults too that scan
tools other than TechII won't see, that still inhibit
it (like I got hung up by some gas tank / EVAP thing
with no codes showing, just no learn, dealership
was able to find it when EFILive6 couldn't and would
not run the relearn).

I bet the "pros" just have a list of "kill 'em all" to cut
the SES-light do-overs.

It doesn't relearn "automatically". It is a procedure you have to do with the Tech2. Many cals don't use it, most Vettes for example. If you swap PCMs you often have to run it again in the "new" vehicle. All new PCMs (running cals that use that test) need to have it done when installed initially. Tunring it off if sending out an exchange PCM prevents the guy having an SES light and not knowing what to do about it, or having to pay somebody (the GM dealer gets as much as $100.00) to do it. Try convincing a guy there is nothing wrong with the PCM, when all they can come back with is "my old PCM didn't turn the SES light on". They will often think you should pay for them having the relearn done. Most of the time it won't be required if the PCM has "learned" once, maybe 10% of the time it will need it again in another vehicle.
The vehicle will run fine either way, it causes no problems being shut off.

That's the answer I hoped for.

Thanks ED.

Btw, the test needs disabled, not just the DTC. If you don't send out a lot of exchange boxes, there is no reason to screw with it.
