My girlfriend has hinted that I may be getting tuning software for Christmas :-) I am only interested in options with a handheld scanner/tuner like EFILive has. I remember reading how HPTUNERS may have something similar in the works. Is this true? If so, what is the ETA on release?

I am aware EFILive V2 does not currently black box log, but with the beta version out now, the actual release of BBL is just around the corner. If anyone from HPTUNERS could give an estimate when their handheld tuner will be released, I might just wait.

Our MPVI Pro hardware will standalone datalog but you'll really want a laptop no matter what route you go when it comes to tuning.

I realize the use of a computer is the best route to go and is needed, but I don't like the idea of lugging the laptop around all the time. What I really like about EFILive is the compact handheld unit. What I gather from your response is the HPTUNERS handheld will be used by dealers only?

Sounds like what they're talking about is similar to EFILive's AutoCal module.
One way or another, a PC will be required to tune - if it's lugging a laptop in the car with you, or getting on the net for help, you'll need a PC. That said, EFILive's V2 will reduce the need to lug a PC to next to none. I've been testing the BBL beta release and it's pimp! Stand alone flashing and direct serial interface to WB's is around the corner as well.
Also, you can download EFILive's software and give it a test drive.

While handhelds are "convenient", if you're tuning in a serious way
you will be spending more time reviewing log data than on poking
tunes into the PCM. That means you want something that can run
Excel, display log traces / histograms and so on. I can't see doing
that on a sub-VGA screen with only arrow and "go" buttons.
A little 12V inverter and a beater laptop is what I recommend.
