Default Lt1 vs. Grand Prix GTP...horrible street race

A little build up...I'm driving back from the local bowling alley due to some jerk-offs trying to start a fight. I have my girlfirend with me, and she hates street racing (too bad...). I'm sitting at light that is about to turn, when I see this 30+ year old man and a few people lookin at me for a race. I just laughed and pointed him out to my girl, who is crackin up about it. This guy was in an Oldsmobile turd. He guns it, and I don't even waste my gas. Right as he's speeding up, I see the Grand Prix behind me downshift and switch lanes.

I roll down my window after seeing the people in the car look over. It was a couple people I knew wanting a race in the guy's new car. It's about a '98 Grand Prix GTP (badge was on the side, not sure of year). He wanted it on a backroad (f-body+local country road=shitty idea). I said no, but we end up at a stoplight in front of the local Indiana State Police post.

When the light turns green, I wait for him to hit it. He doesn't, so I hit it and started going. Apparently he had the same idea, because he hit at the same moment. Through 1st I kept him at my door, and I shut it down at 50 due to an increase in police activity lately. My girlfriend yelling didn't help at all, and neither did the traffic that pulled out in front of us.

Now I've got mixed feelings about this one. I've got my intake off right now, and I don't know much about those cars besides paper information. Anyone got any ideas on whether I wouldn't killed/been killed? Can't really call this one a kill after shutting it down so early.

From my understanding, being part of a few Grand Prix boards, GTP's fall on their face up top, but are usually pretty strong down low. If you had kept going, you would've started pulling on him pretty good.

Definitely a whole lotta slow. But dammit...it's not often people even wanna race. Not even the local Honda gang will look me in the eye. And I've only seen one turbo Civic around here.

In seymour there is one white GSR that will hang around often, it is turbod, making about 350-400whp according to the dyno. The other one is an h22 turbo making 422 exactly. Find them lol.

h22 what dammit? What's it in? And is the gsr a 4 door? I've seen the black type R crusin around, an orange civic with blue headlights, a white civic with yellow headlights and roof racks, and a black hatchback. There are also a few that I won't even mention because they seem to just sit around talking about their Hondas. Oh...also a blue civic b16 dohc turbo with the intercooler showing up front.

Maybe I'm not reading right, was that even a race. You were in front of a State Police barracks and there is increased police activity....Uh yea you trying to stir up the nest?

My 98 GTP with headers, CAI, rockers, mail tune, pulley ran 13.4@103 on street tires with no track prep hotlapped.

My LT1 went 13.1@102.6 with LTs, 3.42s, stall, ram air, mail tune on DRs IN BETTER WEATHER.

They will go mod for mod with an LT1 fbody... I would know. I owned both.

Do NOT underestimate the L67. A stock bottom end L67 has gone 8s.

My '99 GTX pulled low 12's on street tires before I sold it. Don't know about falling on their face at higher up as I was trapping close to 120mph at low altitude tracks.

Also, it wasn't right in front of, the post is about 2 blocks from that light. I checked for cops before I hit and let off early. Stupid, but I did it and no harm done.

We live in Southern Indiana.

And, to be clear, I never disrespected his car. Not sure of mods on his, so I can't get too accurate a judgement. I know those cars are supposed to be rated for about 260hp or somethin similar. Looked into jacking the motor out of one and transferring it into a '98 Grand Am. They make turbo kits to mate to the s/c now, so I'd say they have pretty good potential.

Good run (or sort of run, lol). I've run a few GTP's when I had my cam/bolt-on 1993 Trans Am and it seems that even with decent mods (full bolt-ons, cam, etc) they aren't highway monsters. They cam definitely be quick in the 1/4 mile with traction though. Also, when they start slapping turbos on them then watch out.

I'm lookin to redeem myself at the track. I'm not running on radials though, so whoo for lack of traction! And that Grand Prix looks SICK.
