Mach at the track

I remember fox body's riding around and making alot of noise. Other than that the tpi cars seemed to have better results at my local track......just not many tpi cars around. My dad bought a 85 IROC new (still has it and only has 26k on it). We had no problem with fox bodies in it. part of the problem was most Irocs/z28's were not tpi cars and they were a more expensive car also.

Around here, only the GM faithful thought that the TPI cars were a threat to the 5.0's. Generally when they brought up a TPI car, it was the 5.7 to try and run with a 5.0...and around here the 5.0 would eek out the 5.7 in the 1/4. If you wanna play the would a been could a been card...yeah if the 5.7 had of came with the 5 speed behind it, it probably would of out ran the 5.0. Glad GM didn't, I would of never jumped from GM to Ford if the 5.0's weren't mopping up back then.

it was a platform issue. just like the camaro and mustang battle currently. the tpi 305 made more hp than the ford 5.0, but the car was just plain old heavier.

Back then we didn't have the rear wheel dyno's like we have now and had to rely on what the manufacturers told us. Just because a manufacturer says a car makes X amount of power, unless you have a way of checking it, you don't know (ie. 99 Cobra). We used to all think that GM either over rated their HP numbers or Ford under rated theirs. I know the Third Gen body was heavier than the Fox's, but it seemed like when guys would swap the 305/350 TPI motors, they still didn't make strong runners...except for trucks. They made good truck motors for their down low torque.

you sort of touched on one point. GM made the HP through torque and ford did it through rpm. they just wouldn't rev high enough because the tpi couldn't breathe. wicked cool looking engines though.

Lol @ the 305 truck motor. I pissed off a guy in his 3rd gen Camaro RS with a 305... door to door with him.... with a peice of crap Escort GT. If I were him I would have took that car and burned it after that. The 350's.. I liked better. When I was turning 16(yes I am old), we actually test drove an 86' Yellow IROC-Z (new on lot).. I wanted it bad.. mom....said...no....dammit.

anyway, I know what you are saying... lots of uber loyalty lately. Not sure if it's because of the GM guys getting defensive about the government buyout of what.... coming to the defense of the brand so to speak...
Either way, both companies make good cars.. they always have. I have never been a brand loyalist. I will drive what car I like.. I don't car what brand it is. Actually talking my brother out of a C6Z06 right now, to get him to get a regular C6 LS3 because it would fit his needs better since he wants to build/supercharge the motor.
Hell, I used to have an import that regularly took domestic lunch money on the street. But I hung out with the guys with some of the quickest domestics in the area. I earned their respect because we were all car guys and didn't care about "brands". They would "sic" me on an unsuspecting Vette, or F-body. Fun days those were.

No!
Well, when it comes to mod, all bets are off... it comes down to $$$ put into the car. I bet yours hauls the mail though. Love the T/As(used to have a 95 Vert myself, and miss it)
btw, I know of a guy locally with a turbo fox.. auto tranny.. street driven all the time.. full street car... this thing runs high 5's in the 1/8th off transbrake... very fast car. And docile on the street too.

If you would been with me in the early 90's (still tpi stuff) when I first started working for the road race team you would wonder if the mustang even competed with the f-bodies. Mustangs got their *** handed to them in a big way in the showroom stock class.
