Walked a Tundra tonight.
Well, I'm on my way home from work at about 10:45 tonight, and am just MMOB. Well, I come up to this red light, and I see some head lights coming up pretty quick, and moving over to the left lane next to me. Well, he stopped short of the line, so I figure nothing's gonna go down. Well, about 10 secs. later, he decides to move on up. No revs were thrown, but I figured I'd hit it just to be on the safe side. So, it turns out, he hits it too. Off the line, it's about the same, but I'm just a bit ahead. After about a second or two, I just start walking him. We finally shut it down at about 85-90, and I'm ahead by about a whole truck length.
He stayed on my bumper for about the next mile until we hit another red light. Windows were down, so after he rolled up he said, "I guess you've got a few more ponies in there than me." So I asked him how big his engine is and he said, "5.7L, but maybe I shoulda waited a year for the 5.9L." When the light turned green I gave him a quick WOT run, and we parted ways. Def. a nice guy.
Well, when I got home I did a little research on the 5.7L Tundra, and I found out it's got 381 hp, and 401 lb-ft of torque. Also it weighs about 5400 lbs. Am I missing something here? My Sierra only has a 5.3L engine with stock power at 295 hp, and 335 lb-ft of torque. I also have a K&N intake, and about a quarter tank of gas, and my truck weighs about 5000 lbs with me in it. Is 500-600 lbs enough to make a difference like that even though I have about 80 less hp, and 60 less lb-ft of torque?
Anyway, long story short... Don't mess with a GM Truck.

Thanks. I did some research last night and I was surprised to see the hp rating on the Tundra. That race would have made more sense seeing as GM underrates their engines, and Toyota probably overrates them. I'm going to check and see what the ratio on the rear end is, but that might not make much of a difference seeing as it has a six-speed auto, and mine is a four-speed.
EDIT: The Tundra's rear-end ratio is 4.10:1

There were some articles about Toyota and other import manufacturers over-rating the numbers. I'd expect this from imports.... trying to make up for something are we???
I drove an early model T-100 (work truck...I'd NEVER own one myself). It was rated 'whatever' but it was def a dog.

The new Tundra 5.7 is 381/401 hp/tq. As tested 0-60 with the extended cab 4wd model by an outside company is 6.3 seconds. The reg cab short bed 2wd is expected to do 0-60 in 6 seconds flat (lightning is 5.8 to put that into perspective). With the towing package i believe you can get 4.30's in the rear). Tested rwhp by the same place said 325 i believe at the wheels (higher than the chevy silverado they tested). The truck is really fast and are you sure it's a new body because as far as i know they havn't been released yet. The 5.7 is new for the 07 year. I've ridden in a few of the 07's and trust me, they're definitely quick.

Nice kill. BTW I had some stupid kid right beside me at a light in a Tundra tell me how much faster Japanese V8's are in comparison to American V8's and how he's going to smoke me in my Camaro. He seemed serious too. We both punch it and I stay with him side by side on purpose and then punch it! I put a bus length on him and he immediately makes a right at the first light. Just thought I would add this as a good laugh since the subject was on Tundra's.lol

Not sure what they all put out but the motor is borrowed from a Lexus model making over 430hp. The trucks are stout and i'm not riding in test vehicles all the time, i'd riding in production pickups being sent to dealers already. The trucks are powerful and I cant wait to see how they fair in a reg cab short bed version Yes the motor is an aluminum DOHC 5.7.

Here are the details;
http://www.familycar.com/RoadTests/ToyotaTundra/Index2007.htm
It appears to be very quick to 60 but quickly falls off to average by the 1/4 mile mark.

Unleashing this powertrain down the drag strip, we recorded a stunning 0-60-mph time of 6.3 seconds, while the quarter-mile came up in 14.8 seconds at 93.7 mph.

I don't mean to bust your bubble, you only beat a 235-271 hp (different based on years) 4.7. I honestly don't think you could even put up a decent fight against the 5.7 tundra unless you had the newer 6.0 or duramax. Search around and see test results for that 5.7 in the tundra and compare it against your truck for proof. Toyota raised the bar for 1/2 ton truck horsepower & torque.

Well than, this guy didn't know anything about his truck because he said it was a 5.7L, and "I should have waited a year to get the 5.9L." Maybe he meant he had a 4.7L. But I don't know where he got 5.9L from. Maybe he was just an idiot. Oh, well.

Yeah NO tundra from 06 or earlier had anythign bigger than a 4.7 with only 271hp. That weigh under 5000lbs empty at the heaviest. Your truck has more power but less aggressive gears.
Hence why it was close to start and you walked him in the end.
If it really was an 07 then maybe he was a test driver for Toyota?
