Default '01 SS vs. Volvo R60

A buddy of mine has a pretty new R60 (T5) and has been wanting to race for a while. We finally set it up tonight. We ran once from a dig and I spun a little but we were dead even, he has AWD, untill about 40 when I completely hooked and then I started pulling hard. I ran it up to about 110 and had him by 3+ cars. Next we went from a 20 roll. We again went up to about 110 and I ended up winning by 4+ cars. The driver is a friend of mine who is cool but his buddy that was with him is a tool and he was talking before saying to him that it's just a heavy american piece of ****, you got this dude. So needless to say it was fun to see his face afterwards. Good fun though between friends. His mods are intake, exhaust, and a chip/tune.

Add a chip and tune to any turbo european car and they can beat a satellite orbiting the earth at 18000mph. Or you would think. I hear this allllll the time about audi/bmw/vw etc. Nice kill, was it an I5? I know a lot of the volvos are.

good kill on yet another turbo car. It's funny how our mostly stock cars (lsx) can outrun fi cars a lot of the time w/o much effort.

Nice kill. There were some (edit) S60Rs campaigned in Speed GT but they never could get competitive and reliable with big hp numbers. It won one race over a few years at Road Atlanta - in the rain.

Haha, nice kill. Reminds me of the time a passenger in a new VW GTI told me the car had "a few goodies" and got offended when I told him it wasn't going to be good for them. Turns out "goodies" meant a chip and obviously it didn't go very well for them.

On a side note, my boss has an Volvo V8 S80 that I get to drive sometimes and the thing hauls ***, especially for a 4000+ pound car. AWD and 311/325 flywheel, I believe, not to mention it's one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven. If I had that kind of money, it would be my daily driver hands down.

Time to read up about that R60.

Aha, I'm assuming by R60 you mean S60R? I wondered why I couldn't find any info on the "R60". Turns out it is an inline 5 cylinder that's rated 300/295 and weighs a little over 3600 pounds. It's AWD, so while that helps his launch, it's going to hurt his power to the ground. So to sum up, stock for stock, you're making more power in a slightly lighter car, so you should take him. Your car probably gained as much as or more than his did with your mods versus his, plus he had the passenger, so it's all you for the win. Outcome makes sense to me unless one of you couldn't drive.

We both had passengers so that was even. It is called an S60R though, he always just says R60 so thats what I assumed it was called. Its a turbo 5 but he said that the stock turbo is pretty small so it is only capable of a few pounds over stock. It was a fun night though, just a friendly race.

my 96 volvo 850R ran 13.7 it was a pretty quick heavy car. It would outrun bolt on ls1's to about 105mph on the highway. Turbo swap, full exhaust, and some other things and those things can go pretty good. They just dont have the ***** to hang with ls1's on the big end though.

Yeah and it would also outrun chumps in mustangs too. But instead of passing the volvo they would stay behind it, im going to guess because their lack of horsepower. Its ok though, i would be bitter too if i drove a mustang.
