Default Brace that goes under the driveshaft

Hey guys on the 93 up fbody the black flat brace that goes from on side of the driveshaft tunnel to the other side under the driveshaft what is this brace for? I can remove it an leave it off when I do my true dual setup? I can tuck it closer if this is gone but dont want to get rid of it if it will cause a problem. My car is a 02 convertible but I will have strut tower brace on it aswell. Thanks for the info

That little piece of metal is called the Tunnel Brace. Mine wasn't on the car when I bought it. Those mounts are shitty, I ripped them right off the Car loading it on a Trailer. I have a Torque Arm that mounts to that spot, and it caught the Trailer just right and ripped it completely off.

I don't see removing it causing a problem.

Like merv has stated it is the tunnel brace. It is there to help strengthen the floor of the car but it really doesn't help much. Most people remove it.

It's there to show you where the driveshaft loop
should go.

Either that or where to mount your new torque arm.

For those that have run your cars hard, have you ever peeled back the carpet and looked at those spot welds running laterally, just in front of the forward most seat mount brace?

See all that spider cracking running radially away from the spot welds? It's mostly on the passenger side ...

So what is the solution to prevent this from happening?

I wish I knew. But saying that the G-Load brace does nothing is a bit of a stretch. I have rewelded the spots and even stitched the brace underneath.

Just took these ...

These are close ups ... the spot on the bottom right is one of the ones I welded up and ground smooth.

I have to take the Interior out of mine and repair them mounts. I'm going to use some Steel plate and weld it in.

I tried that on other cars and it just moved the ripping to the edge of the welded metal.

Like I said, not sure what the fix is, so I just keep repairing the spots.

Well, I was under my car today looking to see how Im going to run my exhaust and just noticed that the brace is way diffrent on the convertibles than the hardtop cars. I guess mine will be staying on forsure.

Lakewood driveshaft loop. Fits right up.

Not to be confused with the kooky X stamping
up by the trans crossmember, which has to go
if you're running anything fatter than a 2.5" Y
pipe (and even then, be prepared to beat some
iron). Do not bother trying the bad joke version
that SLP sells (or sold).

I'll have to pull up my carpet and take a look. I installed a set of the Kenny Brown Racing "double diamond" subframe connectors in my car a LONG time ago. One of their mounting points is those brackets.

Don't misunderstand ... the tearing is not taking place where the g-load brace mounts. It's the welded brace in front of the trans mount. But, removing any reinforcement of the tunnel can make the issue worse.

I used " that SLP " drive shaft loop. It seems okay. Have I missed something?

i had to take mine out to fit my true duals the other day and the exhaust guy had a good point. he said if the driveshaft broke at the front, it would keep it from hitting the ground and capapulting the car into a front flip. but now my crosspipe is in its place, so it's all good. as far as keeping the floor sturdy, it's so flimsy, i doubt it does a whole lot.
