Default Front Monroe strut nightmare

A few weeks ago I did my lowering springs with Monroe shocks in the rear and Monroe struts in the front. Well driving today my passenger side front strut blew out completely. Scared the crap out of me at 70mph. Also the lowering springs are BMR 1.25 drop. Immediately I took the car to my buddies shop, lifted it up and saw the strut was completely destroyed and destroyed my strut mount too. So I removed all the Monroe shocks off the car boxed them back up and took them all back. Never again. So I took a haul out to summit racing retail store and got KYB agx adjustable shocks to go with the BMR springs. Has anyone had issues with these ? Or will this work out much better. I got them for the front and rear all adjustable.

The strut blew through the mount? Did you reuse/replace the additional rubber piece in the mount that distributes the load?

when I put Tokicos and Stranos on my car I used new Monroe mounts and moog isolators..

well the Monroe mounts are junk because one nutsert on each side wasnt seated and the bolts dont tighten up...

so I have 3 tightened up bolts and 1 bolt on each side with a 1/4 inch gap ...

pisses me off.

I went with moog mounts and isolators I'm not taking any more chances. Figured that with BMR springs, kyb adjustable agx ( all corners ) and umi upper control arms and new moog ball joints I should be safer. I loved Monroe for years and my grand prix is sitting on quick struts and there great but this ? I'm paying the extra from now on.

Why are you using Monroe struts with 550lbs lowering springs? Those things barely dampen stock springs... and you just added 240lbs of spring to it and limited the travel.

The KYB aren't going to be much better.

Bilstein at a minimum or Konis.

I have KYB AGX shocks and they are a bit rough. Despite what KYB says about the damping levels, the compression and rebound damping to not seem to increase linearly relative to each other. When you've got the rebound damping stiff enough, the compression damping is too high.

KYB tech support stated the following regard AGX settings:

"For an eight position adjustable product, bump and rebound damping are adjusted together, and the damping force values are approximate to the following:

Factory stiffness is a relative value of 100%

#1 = 95% (5% softer than stock)
#2 = 100% (Stock)
#3 = 107.5% (7.5% stiffer than stock)
#4 = 115% (15% stiffer than stock)
#5 = 143.5% (43.5% stiffer than stock)
#6 = 172% (72% stiffer than stock)
#7 = 197.5% (97.5% stiffer than stock)
#8 = 223% (123% stiffer than stock)
"

I'd love to do koni or bilstein but they fell out of my price range due to other car modding in my fleet. But this is my first lowered car. Live and learn

I have KYB GR2s on my Nissan with 1.9" lowering springs. They've lasted 38k miles so far and ride decently. The GR2s and AGXs are different, but I wouldn't trust them to dampen the fronts of the BMRs. For the rear, yeah, no problem.

So maybe use a different spring then ? I've just read so many good reviews about the BMR springs which is why I went with those instead of Eibach

Rough as in the ride quality ? Or just setting the right number

Ride quality for me.

Starts out too soft on setting one. If you ramp up to get the compression damping where where you want it, the rebound is still too soft. If you increase even more to get the rebound damping right, the compression is way too stiff. Each step up in setting seems to increase rebound more than compression.

So it's either kind of bouncy, or teeth rattling stiff.

Ok now this has me thinking. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and use the summit credit card and go with Bilstein. Back to summit I go lol

It all depends how you drive your car. The softer settings are perfectly fine for a daily driver or drag racer. But if you like twisty roads and handling, it's harder to find the right setting for these shocks. I tend to run them stiffer and just deal with the rough ride.

I'm in no rush to replace the KYBs. They are by no means, a terrible damper. When I need to, I'll most likely replace them with Koni. Otherwise, I'll be happy with the AGXs for now. The fact they are adjustable could help them work with a variety of springs rates versus a non-adjustable damper. They are going to be a HUGE improvement over the Monroe dampers.

Why are you buying everything at summit? WS6Store has Bilsteins cheaper than KYBs. I've never heard of anyone enjoying the ride with KYBs and lowering springs, some just say it's "ok" and can tolerate it.

GR2 on these cars sucks almost as bad as stock shocks. I had them. Not bad for a cheap fix I guess, but I should have just gotten Bilstein the first time around.
