heads up display in a 00 Camaro SS?
Has this been done to a LS1 F-Body before? I really like how the C5Zs/plus have the heads up display. I was wondering if anyone attempted this before? Can't imagine its impossible, maybe difficult at the least.
Any write ups, articles or info that someone could share?

Yeah, I think it would be pretty slick to have in the SS. I've been reading from other articles, nothing has come up about anyone doing this to an F-body. I'm certainly willing to do it and put the funds towards it. But the million dollar question is finding the right materials. I would want it in the dash like the C5Zs have it, not sticking out like I've come across on a few generic styles, don't want a hack job.
This is the only related thread I could find, which is pretty much nothing LOL. At least I found out not having a HUD windshield will work just fine.

can someone explain how the data is picked up from the car's computer.
I thought of something similar to HUD and my idea was to use a pocket projector to project the speedometer onto the windshield, tint a part of windshield if need be it.
The brain of this could be a car computer that reads info from the OBDII port, projects info using the projector.
If a car computer isn't really an option, an Iphone or Itouch can do the job too.

Thanks for link, that was the start I was looking for. Seems like a lot of links to more links. I'm trying pull it all together for everyone on here.
Alright so the average "easy" so called option seems to be the defi. I don't think it would be a bad deal as long as I could conceal it. I don't want that bulky *** thing in my sight.

there is no room without major hacking of the firewall/metal under the dash.
I had a 1996 bonneville HUD that I was going to adapt to my WS6, but I would have had to cut out a place 7" by 8" by 3" deep to hide the projector.
It did display on the windshield, but not nearly as good as my 92 bonneville or 2000 grand prix OEM units did.

Here’s a couple of things I dug up if it helps.

So there is a few that I’ve found. It looks like using the gm hud from the Grand Prix isn’t as easy as first thought. The defi may be an eye sore. Not sure of any other ideas.

This one that black n sleek posted might not be too bad if you just have the screen protruding out of the middle dash vent? Meaning all you see is that screen? The idea is not to see anything but the projection tho, no tacky HUD box please.

Ok, dont know how much you have heard since you posted this but here is what I found years ago. I wanted to do it to my 2000 Z28. Did a ton of research. If you want to do it the way i know you want, it is at the very least, EXTREMELY difficult to do. First, the problem is to cut into your dash, install a system that wasnt designed to go there and then make it look half way ok is tough. Then if you do get it to work, The corvette has a very "Special" windshield made by Du-pont that runs in the thousands of dollars (around 2k). It has a thin special film inside the windshield that allows the digital display to read well. If its not there it is very hard to see during the day and in certain light conditions. The only F-body I ever saw that did it somewhat successfully cut out a 6x6 (approx.) of tint and ghetto stuck it to there windshield so the display showed up. Even then it looked bad. I really hope someone comes up with a way to do it right but from what I have researched, it would be very costly and not worth it to do. Sorry Man. I like the idea as well.

I just want to add to the info already posted here that anybody who says you need a special windshield or film is wrong. Lots of people do HUD swaps into their Corvettes WITHOUT swapping windshields and they can read the displays just fine in daylight.
The primary concern is space to mount it since there is no room for an OEM HUD assembly (either Grand Prix, Bonneville, or Corvette) in the cowl area without some cutting. The secondary concern is making it look good. You will have to hack up your fragile ABS dashboard panel and make it still look good. Electrical is not too much of an issue if you can tap into power, ground, and VSS (4000PPM).
