LS Swaps Abound at Formula Drift Pro-Am Event

Formula Drift Pro 2 Qualifying showcases some wild weekend warrior, LS-powered drift builds.

This past weekend, Formula Drift arrived in St. Louis, Missouri with the intent of decimating tires at Gateway Motorsports Park. And before the big names that we all know and love throw down, the pro-am drivers take a shot at. In particular, this is the Pro 2 qualifying session. Pro 2 is one step away from prime time, and, as a result, the drivers are talented, and hungry for success. That makes for some of the wildest driving seen during the whole race weekend.

To that end, since the Pro 2 guys are close to the real deal, but not quite there, the rides tend to also be in the same boat. Sure, they’re built to FD-specs, with a prepped chassis, roll cage, fire suppression and a powerful engine, but, seeing as funding tends to be a bit tight, the rides aren’t always as dialed as the Pro cars. This fact, combined with the diverse talent pool, means that things tend to get nutty.

How about the rear-wheel drive, V8-swapped Mitsubishi Evo, for starters? Of course, unusual swaps are just the start. It’s the insane driving that really takes the cake here. Did we mention the drivers are hungry? To that end, wild entries, even wilder lines and a need to showcase the goods to sponsors and would-be sponsors means these drivers are on the edge, at all times.

LS swaps abound in this crowd, and they’re usually easy to spot, or hear, from the sound alone. So, got any favorites? Drop a time marker from your favorite ride so we can see.
