Modified Camaro ZL1 Nearly Destroys Tesla In Drag Race

Electric cars are fast, but old-fashioned dinosaur juice isn’t exactly slow, either.

So we just saw old Cleetus McFarland showing off how some tiny mods can make some big power in the new Camaro ZL1. Now it’s time to see how that translates to speed. This video shows Cleetus having a good time bumming around the Streetcar Takeover in Atlanta, and it features multiple minutes of glorious burnout footage. Like, speedo pegged at 160 in a Caprice types of gratuitous honing.

But the real meat of this video is the drag racing. Around seven minutes in the drag racing starts, and damn is this Camaro fast. In his first run, he blistered a Corvette so hard that he got to ease off before the finish and still nearly broke into the tens. Run two is a battle against a Camaro SS, and again it is easily won. But round three is where things get tough. Cleetus pulled a Tesla Model S as his rival for the third round.

Now, the Model S is already one of the quickest cars in the world on its own, but this particular car is the Tesla Racing Channel P100D, which holds the record for world’s fastest Tesla.

So, to say that Cleetus was on the back foot in this race would be a hilarious understatement. A barely-modified Camaro ZL1 with less than 400 miles on the odometer versus the fastest Model S in the world. It shouldn’t even be a race.

Spoiler alert: the Camaro loses the race, but you would not believe how close it ended up. It’s hard to tell if the Tesla was letting off at the end of the run, or was just running out of speed. Regardless, the Camaro managed to hold on at the end and lost by less than five feet.

The electric car may be the way of the future, but it doesn’t look like speed junkies need to start worrying yet. If your neighbor wants to talk about how fast his new Model S is, let him. Just remember that a new Camaro and less than a $1000 in upgrades is all it will take to shut them down.

America.
